Shakhtar Donetsk, which will play French Rennes in the playoffs of the Europa League, has officially announced the signing of a five-year contract with 21-year-old Saburtalo and Georgian national team right-back Giorgi Gocholeishvili. The parties did not disclose the amount of the transfer, but according to Transfermarkt, it amounted to 1 million euros.
Giorgi Gocholeishvili is a graduate of the Saburtalo Academy, for whose main team he has been playing since 2020 (8 goals and 12 assists in 85 matches). This year, the defender has played 30 games in the Georgian Championship (4 goals and 4 assists), two games in the Georgian Cup and four matches in the Conference League qualification. On November 17, 2022, a talented footballer, who has seven matches for the Georgian youth team, made his debut as part of the Georgian national team in a friendly match against Morocco (0:3).
Gocholeishvili, who was interested in Juventus and Valencia, will become the fourth legionnaire in the team of Igor Jovicevich (after Croat Neven Djurasek, Lassina Traore from Burkina Faso and Brazilian Lucas Taylor).
It should be noted that in previous years, eight Georgian legionnaires played for Shakhtar: defenders Giorgi Tsimakuridze, Giorgi Chikhradze and David Khocholava, midfielders Tornike Okriashvili and David Targamadze, as well as forwards Mikhail Potskhveria, Yuri Gabiskiria and Yuri Gabiskiria.
