Mateusz arrived in Poland in May 2022. “He left suddenly and only told us that he missed Poland, and secondly, he had a fight with a girl and was leaving,” says Dorota, Mateusz’s mother.
The family lost contact with him for several days. Where exactly the man was before arriving in Wroclaw is unknown. Two days before his death, he contacted Mrs. Dorota, sending her, among other things, films shot on the streets of Lower Silesia. - Later, the connection was cut off, I tried to get through, but the phone did not answer. As it turns out later, this is because her son died during a police intervention on Grabiszynska Street in Wroclaw, he says.
Civil detention on the streets of Wroclaw
According to the Wroclaw police and prosecutor’s office, Mateusz allegedly tried to steal a car in one of the districts of Wroclaw. Anna L., Adam I’s cohabitant, was supposed to have witnessed this incident. However, we found that she testified before the prosecutor that she saw from the window of her apartment someone who was “hanging around near the wreckage of her partner’s car.” She admitted that the car did not have, among other things, an engine or a hood.
However, without hesitation for a long time, Adam I woke up, and he ran out of the apartment and began chasing G. As Fact established, a few hours earlier, I. drank vodka and beer. Even at one o’clock in the afternoon of the next day, i.e. about 10 hours after the tragedy, he was drunk.
On one of the streets, two more men joined him. At about 3 am, after a fight, they threw Mr. Mateusz to the ground and arrested him. In addition to Adam I., he was kept by Ivo P. and Adam P. - Then they took blood from everyone. It turned out that in the blood of Adam P. there was a drug, a derivative of mephedrone, - says the source of Fact. As it turns out later, tests will show the presence of drugs in Mateusz G.’s blood.
According to Fact, the police did not find any tools with which the deceased man could get into the car. The officers also checked the parking lot, where witnesses must have seen Mateusz Gerritz. There were no signs of forced entry on any of the cars.
One of the perpetrators: unnaturally agitated and aggressive
Approximately 10 minutes after the civil detention, two criminals from the Wrocław-Old Town police station appeared on the scene, applicants: Rafal B. (47 years old) and Maximilian D. (40 years old). According to them, Mateusz was in an agitated state all the time, did not answer their calls, and putting on handcuffs was not an easy task. It only worked when he was turned over on his stomach. As eyewitnesses of this event and participants in the civil detention testify, despite the incapacitation, the police nevertheless used great force.
“Fact” established that applicant B. behaved in an unnatural way. - According to eyewitnesses, he was more excited and aggressive, - says our source. According to our findings, it was Rafal B. who held his back with his knee at the level of Mateusz B.’s shoulder, although he was handcuffed, B. twisted his arms to such an extent that B. cried the last of his strength and begged him to stop.
- Several shocking statements of militiamen stuck in my memory. One said that it would be like with Igor, probably meant Igor Stakhovyak (in 2016, as a result of police intervention by policemen from the same police station, Igor Stakhovyak died, and four police executioners received a sentence of absolute years in prison later, ed. .). When the ambulance took the man to the hospital, he told the witnesses that although the social value of this person is zero, we will pray that he recovers, Anna Troyanovskaya, who watched everything that was happening, told us.
However, not only she remembered the strange behavior of the police. “Fact” established that several witnesses of the incident confessed to the prosecutor that, in their opinion, the police officers used too much force on the detainee.
“He spoke more quietly and finally stopped talking,” one of the witnesses describes the incident. Then the doctors started resuscitation. After a few minutes, they managed to briefly restore Mateusz’s vital functions. It was then that the decision was made to transport them to the Weigly hospital in Wroclaw. However, when the rescuers got to the clinic with him, the doctor pronounced him dead.
Prosecutors: We are waiting for the results of the autopsy. No suspects yet
As prosecutor Stanisław Bar from the unit in Opole admitted (the district prosecutor’s office in Opole accepted the investigation from the Wrocław prosecutor’s office, ed. note), the initial autopsy did not answer the question about the cause of death.
- Numerous abrasions of the epidermis were found on the body of the deceased, - prosecutor Bar tells Fact, adding that they belong to different periods and are not related to death. Bar also emphasizes that the proceedings are currently underway in the case of manslaughter, and not against specific individuals. It is expected that in a few weeks investigators will know the full conclusion of the autopsy.
Doubts of the patron of the Guerrian family
But the lawyer representing the family of Mateusz Gerritz, legal adviser Radush Pawlikowski, notes that there are many doubts in the materials.
“I have doubts about the collection of evidence when this material got to the Wroclaw prosecutor’s office,” he says. What is it really about?
- In the files, I did not see the protocols of analyzes of police officers for drugs in the blood, taking blood samples for the presence of alcohol. If such events were held, then where are the protocols? - asks the patron. “Fact” established that the officers were checked only with a breathalyzer. None of the tests revealed the presence of alcohol in the exhaled air.
He also adds that the documentation does not contain, in particular, protocols for examining the clothes of police officers. Why is it important? Pawlikowski emphasizes that thanks to the biological marks on the clothes and their location, it is possible to recreate what the intervention looked like.
The German prosecutor’s office is investigating the case
Dorota, mother of Mateusz, cannot come to terms with the death of her son and with what the Wroclaw police say. How could they treat my child like that? I won’t forgive the police. My son did nothing wrong, he was a good person, he loved music and people, and something like that happened to him,” he tells us, bursting into tears.
Due to the fact that Mateusz also had German citizenship, the case will also be investigated by the local prosecutor’s office. Oder investigators are investigating the issue of inaction during the collection of evidence and manslaughter.
