Long-term marital relationships have a huge impact on health. Marriage can keep us from dementia and positively affect the work of the heart.
A long-term happy marriage can help you stay fit and naturally reduce your risk of certain diseases. This applies primarily to the functioning of the brain, but also to the heart and hormonal balance. Happy relationships can lower cortisol production and reduce stress.
How does marriage affect the brain?
According to a study by the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, published in the Journal of Aging ang Health, a successful marriage can protect a man from dementia. The study involved 8706 people aged 44 to 68 years, who were divided into 6 groups depending on marital status, age, number of children and education. The experts checked how these factors affected the likelihood of developing dementia and cognitive decline. Studies have shown that happily married people are significantly less likely to suffer from dementia than single or divorced people.
How does marriage affect the functioning of the heart?
It also turns out that a successful marriage also improves the functioning of the heart and cardiovascular system. Spousal support can be critical in terms of preventive measures, healthy lifestyles, and healthy eating habits. It can also increase the chances of survival in the event of a heart attack.
Married patients are 14 percent more likely to survive a heart attack than unmarried patients, according to a 929,552 study conducted by British scientists at Aston Medical School in Birmingham. “Our results show that marriage is the only way to get support for managing risk factors for heart disease. And as a result, she survived,” said study author Dr. Paul Carter.
Marriage reduces stress
A happy marriage can also affect hormonal balance and reduce the production of stress hormones. There is a rationale for this - having someone to support us through difficult situations and help us get through them unscathed makes us feel more confident than when we have to deal with stress alone.
Single people have higher cortisol levels than those in happy relationships. It is interesting that in this case it does not matter whether this relationship is official or not. Studies by American scientists from the University of Chicago and Northwestern University have shown that the level of cortisol reduces the very involvement of a person in emotional relationships.
