Norway, together with the United States, will transfer two more platoons of NASAMS anti-aircraft missile systems to Ukraine (the first such air defense systems arrived in our country in November). This was stated by Norwegian Defense Minister Bjorn Arild Gramm after a visit to Ukraine, the website of the Norwegian government reports. NASAMS air defense systems have proven their effectiveness as an air defense system. The addition of two more firing sites will greatly improve Ukraine’s ability to defend its cities and critical infrastructure from Russian missile attacks. Norway will train Ukrainian personnel to maintain and operate the system.
Previously, Norway has already provided equipment and training as part of US assistance to Ukraine in the NASAMS program. This assistance was highly appreciated and contributed to the reflection of missile attacks. The continuation of Russian attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure (remember, on March 9, the enemy fired 95 missiles into Ukraine) highlights the need to further improve Ukraine’s air defense. Ukraine has repeatedly turned to international partners with a request to provide more and better air defense systems.
The Norwegian Parliament recently approved a multi-year program named after Fritof Nansen, a Norwegian diplomat, scientist and polar explorer who led the massive humanitarian relief effort for Russia and Ukraine after World War I. Under the Nansen program, Norway will allocate NOK 15 billion ($1.6 billion) annually during the period 2023-2027. In 2023, half of the grant will go to military aid.
Earlier in the United States, three types of weapons were named that changed the course of the war with Russia.
