Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau expressed sympathy to the families of the victims. “I express my deepest condolences to the families of the victims of the bus accident in Croatia. I spoke with Croatian Foreign Minister Gordan Grlic Radman about the situation and thanked the Croatian public services and the public for their help,” he tweeted.

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said 11 people were killed in a bus accident in Croatia, 34 were injured and hospitalized; they are pilgrims who made their way to Medjugorje. Minister of Health Adam Niedzielski and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Marcin Przydacz are leaving for the accident site.

Pilgrims were dying as they traveled to the holy place.

Croatian police spokesman Marko Muric told AFP that the accident happened around 5:40 am. “The bus ran off the road and fell into a ditch near the highway. Several people were killed, several dozen passengers were injured,” Muric said.

The accident occurred on the A4 motorway, in the Varaidin area north of Zagreb, between Jarek Bisashki and Podvorets. The bus was heading towards Zagreb, the Croatian news agency HINA reported.

- The bus was driving from a city near Warsaw. According to some reports, this was a group that planned to make a pilgrimage to Međugorje, Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Davor Božinović said.
