Emmy-winning Netflix series Ozark ended in 2022 after four consistently great seasons. However, due to all the disturbing occurrences and mysterious facts, as well as the realistically well-written characters that have appeared in the series, viewers still can’t stop talking about it.
Despite the Birds’ brilliance, resilience in the face of danger, and the ability to be merciless to achieve their goals, fans also think of all the local victims they’ve left in their wake. From the just good pastor Mason Young to the local petty criminal who had the misfortune to cross paths with the Byrds, they all have a tragic debt to pay.
10 Jonah Bird
Jonah Bird (English)Skylar Gaertner) is the son of Marty (Jason Bateman) and Wendy (Laura Linney), who witnesses his parents’ involvement in the Mexican drug cartel and their subsequent move to the Ozarks to launder money. He learns about the dangerous and often violent lifestyle his family leads.
If you become a victim of murder and intrigue as a child, it will change your life for the worse, especially after Jonah discovered his parents’ involvement in his uncle Ben’s case (Tom Pelphrey) death, which deeply traumatized him. He also observes his mother’s manipulations and ethical compromises she makes for her own gain, which reinforces the tragic elements of his story.
9 Frank Cosgrove Jr.
Frank Cosgrove Jr.Joseph Sikora) is a minor antagonist-turned-antihero of the series, and the son of a Kansas City mob boss. When the casino first opened, Frank spent most of the day there, annoying Ruth Langmore (Julia Garner). After numerous events undermined his authority in the eyes of his father and the Byrds, Frank decided to take it out on Ruth and almost killed her.
However, what happens next for Frank might make a lot of people wince because Darlene Snell (Lisa Emery) later shot him in the genitals in an attempt to win over Ruth after Bird refused to retaliate against him. And later, the same woman kills his father, leaving him in command of an operation he knows nothing about.
8 Sam Dermody
Sam Dermody (ur.Kevin L. Johnson) is a recurring character in the series who serves as a testament to the influence of the Byrd family’s activities on the locals. Sam is a local real estate agent in the Ozarks who was hired by the Byrd family to find their new home. He later hires Wendy Bird as a stage manager to help him make apartment buildings more attractive before showing them to potential buyers.
Sam must have been a local man used as a pawn by the Brides and least of all aware of how they were manipulating him. When the gaming commission begins investigating the Bird family’s business, they choose Sam to take over the strip club in the second season after Sam witnesses his mother’s death while they were fighting in the street. Sam later developed a gambling addiction due to another “favor” the Birds asked for, resulting in his girlfriend leaving him.
7 Russ Langmore
Russ Langmore (ur.Mark Menchaca) - Uncle Ruth, Wyatt (Charlie Tahan) and triplets (Carson Holmes) is the father and is the antagonist of the series’ first season. Despite being considered the local bad boy, Russ is a caring and loving father to his sons and has a great relationship with them.
However, Russ’s faith is more terrible than it might seem, because society scorns and ignores his family’s criminal actions, creating an endless cycle. In addition, Russ had to hide his true sexual orientation. When he eventually fell in love and decided to start a new life with his partner, who turned out to be an FBI agent, the man betrayed him. He then eventually attempts to recover, but is viciously killed by his niece Ruth as part of her larger plan.
6 Grace Young
Grace Young (English)Bethany Ann Lind) is the supportive and devoted wife of Pasteur Mason Young (Michael Mosley). However, as the story progresses, Grace’s circumstances change and she becomes involved in the complex dynamics of the Bird family’s criminal activities and their interaction with the local community.
Despite Grace’s small screen appearance, what happened to her behind the scenes horrifies viewers with how cruel and horrific her death is. Due to the growing tensions and dangers surrounding the lives of those involved in illegal activities, she was killed by Darlene Snell. Her passing marked a major turning point in the storyline and had a lasting impact on Pastor Mason’s character development and motivation throughout the series.
5 Baby Zeke Young
Ezekiel “Zeke” Young is the son of Pastor Mason Young and his late wife, Grace. Zeke, despite being a minor character who contributes nothing to the storyline, has had one of the most tragic lives since his birth. Zika was brought back to life in an unnatural way and possibly against the wishes of his mother, Darlene Snell, who later adopted him.
However, what happened between these two events is a different story, because after the death of his mother, his father, Mason, remained in charge of raising him, but later lost him due to social service. Then, after Mason’s passing, he lived with the Byrd family for a while before Wendy gave him to Darlene as compensation for their river casino. However, Zeke was last seen handed over to the authorities by a distraught Ruth after his legal guardians, Darlene and Wyatt, were gunned down in their home. So Zeke may have a better future than all the adults around him, despite his unfortunate past.
4 Wyatt Langmore
Wyatt Langmore is Ruth Langmore’s favorite cousin and also Russ’s firstborn. Like most members of the Langmore, Wyatt’s life contains a series of unfortunate events, beginning with the tragic death of his father, which deeply affects Wyatt and contributes to his difficult relationship with the Byrds and their associates.
Moreover, estranged from his crime family, Wyatt instantly fell into another, connected with his romantic connection with Darlene Snell. Wyatt constantly found himself in morally difficult situations, despite his genuine benevolence from Darlene. Then, in the end, due to her repulsive behavior, shortly after marrying her, Wyatt met his end at the hands of Javi Navarro (Alfonso Herrera) brutally in his own home, ending another tragic Langmore arc.
3 Ruth Langmore
Ruth Langmore is one of the main characters of the series and an opportunistic fraudster who went from stealing from Bird to laundering money at Bird’s facility. She has a sensitive side and is willing to help and protect those close to her despite her rude demeanor and incessant swearing.
Life for Ruth, like most of the Langmore members, is not easy, beginning with an abusive and manipulative father in prison, who is eventually killed by Byrd. This loss leaves Ruth devastated and conflicted as she both loved and hated her father. Ruth also faces various challenges and betrayals in her interactions with the family she works for, from Marty to Jonah and eventually Ben. She eventually became more resilient as a result of all that she had to go through, but her ties to the Birds in the past ultimately led to her demise.
2 Ben Davis
Ben Davis was introduced to the show in the third season as Wendy’s younger brother who is battling bipolar disorder. He comes to the Ozarks in search of a new beginning and tries to rebuild his life by reuniting with his former family.
Ben’s character is explored throughout the season as he tries to find stability and come to terms with his past. His relationship with Ruth Langmore brought out both the best and the worst in him. However, Ben’s mental health issues become more and more apparent, causing erratic behavior that complicates his relationship. Thus, his character reaches a tragic climax as his actions have serious consequences and his presence becomes a liability, ending in some of the most shocking deaths in the series.
1 Pastor Mason Young
Pastor Mason Young is the local congregation pastor near Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri. In the first season, he becomes involved in the Bird family’s criminal activities when they approach him with a request to invest their illegal money in the construction of a new church.
Over the course of the series, Pastor Mason experiences a series of personal tragedies and moral conflicts. He loses his wife Grace in the worst possible way and has to take care of his young son. Mason’s faith and sanity are tested as he seeks justice for his wife’s death and tries to provide a stable life for his son. Pastor Mason’s character takes a dark turn as he becomes increasingly associated with and even used as a pawn by the Byrds. After all, his death at the hands of Marty was not an escape, but rather another tragic event that claimed his life and caused even more suffering for his child.
