Showrunners Akiva Goldsman And Henry Myers’prequel series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds returns with Season 2 this month, premiering on Paramount+ on June 15th. But before we get back to Captain Christopher Pike and his number one, Steve Weintraub spoke to the stars behind the first and second commanders of the USS Enterprise, Anson Mount And Rebecca Romijnabout upcoming episodes and what the couple might tease fans with.

Last year, Strange new worlds expanded the Star Trek universe in new and old ways, taking us back a decade before the advent of Captain Kirk (William Shatner) headed the “Enterprise” Star Trek: The Original Series. It’s a return to the classic episodic adventure that first captivated spaceflight fans years ago, with new fantasy worlds, aliens, and a surprise crossover with another spin-off series, the animated series, in Season 2. Star Trek: Lower Decks. Without revealing too much, Mount admits that the crossover was a world he wasn’t ready to boldly explore when Goldsman and Myers first revealed their plans, suggesting the duo may have actually “gone crazy.”

In a Collider interview with Mount and Romijin, which you can watch or read below, Weintraub asks what they think of the Star Trek alum and legend’s crossover. Jonathan Frakesand both have something to say about their temporary co-stars, Tony Newsom And Jack Quaid. While they have to keep it under wraps to avoid losing their fingers, we learn there are “big genre twists” and big risks ahead of us this season, with Mount promising that the journey ahead will include “things that Star Trek has never done before,” which kept the energy up during production until the very final episode. Will return in season 2 Ethan Peck, Melissa Navia, Celia Rose Gooding, Paul Wesley, Jess Bush, Babs Olunsanmokunand submit Carol Kane as the new chief engineer of the Enterprise, Pelia.

COLLIDER: I watched the first six episodes of the second season. My only complaint is that I couldn’t watch seven through ten.

ANSON MOUNT: [Laughs] Good to know.

REBECCA ROMAIN: Yes, thank you!

So this season you both will be doing some really cool stuff. What are you even allowed to say?

ROMAIN: Nothing. [laughs]. It makes it so hard. I can’t wait for you to see the seven through the final four.

Mount: Yes, in our contract they have to remove a finger every time we make a faux pas.

However, it should be interesting. It’s hard to bench press when your hands are tied behind your back. The second season consists of 10 episodes, which of the 10 do you like the most and why?

MOUNT: Well, yes, I have a clear favorite.

ROMAIN: I also have a clear favorite, and it seems to me that this is the same one as Anson. It will be Episode 9, but we can’t say anything about it!

INSTALL: [Laughs] Yes, it’s episode 9.

ROMIJN: Obviously we can’t discuss, but I think they will probably announce something about it soon, perhaps? Anyway, we obviously can’t say anything about it. We’ve changed the genre a lot this season and we really need to play hard this season. It’s like the first season, but bigger and better, and we’re very excited to share it with everyone.

Mount: And what’s great about taking big risks, which at the same time is arguably something Star Trek has never done before, is that the level of excitement it brings to the cast is amazing. When we filmed that episode we were talking about, Episode 9, obviously it was towards the end of the season when everyone was tired. Because when you do the last episode, everyone is like, “Oh, okay, we’re almost done!” But getting past the penultimate episode will not be easy. But because of the nature of the episode and what we were doing, we had to rehearse on the weekends and when people showed up, everyone was genuinely happy to be there.

ROMAIN: Let’s fly! Yes, it was so exciting.

Mount: Something I’ve never seen before in all my TV work, and yes, it turned out even better than I had hoped.

I’m just going to quit Hail Mary. This makes me wonder, maybe part of this episode is oneer?

MOUNT: Well, we couldn’t tell you if you were right or not.

ROMAIN: [Laughs] Because then we would lose fingers!

MOUNT: But you are far away, my friend.

One of the things about this season that a lot of people are looking forward to, I believe it’s the 7th episode, which is your lower decks crossover episode. What it was like to be able to cross paths with this show because I didn’t expect it to happen and it’s just such a cool idea.

MOUNT: When Akiva and Henry first told me about it, it was one of those moments where you kind of smile and nod your head, and in your head you think, “Oh no, they’re crazy” because I immediately imagined something like [Who Framed Roger Rabbit], right? But once they explained the concept to me, I thought, “Oh, that’s such a smart way to do it!” I dated and spent time with Jack [Quaid] before and I spoke to Tony [Newsome] before, so I was really happy to see them on set and they didn’t disappoint.

ROMAIN: And they did a very smart job of having Jonathan Frakes direct this episode. He really added a lot. I also know Jack and Tony quite well because my husband lower decksand they needed to make some adjustments as they came from the animated show Star Trek to our set. I mean, I think they even refer to it in some of the dialogue. They kind of had to adjust their energy levels a bit. It was interesting to watch them and they are so brilliant, they are both, I mean, two of the funniest people, so talented, so funny. But watching them come in and make small adjustments to still feel in the right world was interesting.

Mount: Yes, and I also have to say that in many ways it’s very hard to be a guest star on a show that’s already going strong and its tone is spot on. You’re kind of hoping you’re not disappointing anyone, but they really came in and totally owned what they were doing, which is what you have to do with comedy, especially since comedy is more of a living, transformative thing in the moment of doing it.

ROMAIN: Both Tony and Jack have great improv experience, so they were really able to play with a lot of what they were given. I mean a lot was taken from the page and they did completely different things in every take. It was very fun to watch.
