Editor’s Note: Below are spoilers for Ted Lasso’s ending.

While the future Ted Lasso remains a mystery, the universe of the series has great potential for further expansion. The third season of the hit Apple TV+ series ended this week, seemingly on a farewell note, but leaving us plenty of doors open to pop in and see what’s in store for us. Bye Jason SudeikisTed himself, claims that the story they wanted to tell has come to an end, the series has expanded in several directions over the last (and final?) season, developing characters that were previously only in the background and even introducing us to some new ones. .

One of Ted Lassothe precondition is the importance of the community. It is the foundation and most important aspect of any sports club or team in the world and AFC Richmond is no different. The series also relied on the club’s staff and even fans to tell their story, creating a wide range of characters to be told their own stories individually or as a group. While Ted has left England and returned to his family in Kansas City, there is still a lot going on in Richmond that we would like to see.

Football is played on the pitch by two teams of 11 players, with a bench also available during the match. That’s a lot of people, and we’ve only scratched the surface of the Richmond team. We’ve seen them go from relegation to second place in the Premier League and while Ted and his coaching team have certainly had their fair share of success here, it’s not the manager who wins the match, it’s the players on the pitch.

So far, the history of the Richmond team has been somewhat simplistic, as the players have largely followed Ted’s philosophy, which has led to success. Of course, some of them had very special development arcs, like Sam Obisanya (Tohib Jimo), Jamie Tartt (Phil Dunster), Colin Hughes (Billy Harris), and even Isaac McAdoo (Cola Bokinni), but most of the time the team was on screen, following instructions and advice from their coaches, or simply engaging in natural dressing room banter. Even some of the above four players had their own personal development dealing with issues outside of the sport, only Isaac was the one we saw rise to captain - and then only in one episode. However, within the club, they all tended to act as part of a unified whole when it came to the team.

Showing this kind of shared agreement between the men who are part of a single team is important and contributes a lot to the idea of the show’s commonality. The players themselves are one, and only they know what they need to overcome in order to play as one on the field. For Ted Lasso, this portrayal of how football players co-exist as a team worked out great because as important as it was, the show was still mostly about the coach. However, now, especially with the change of command, we have many new opportunities to learn more about them.

‘Ted Lasso’ could show new coaching team learning to work without Ted

Ted got a well-deserved reunion with his family, but as he himself said, “I know people like to say, ‘There’s no place like home,’ but there aren’t many places like AFC Richmond.” Roy Kent left with himBrett Goldstein) was promoted to head coach and it took a lot of us by surprise because, well, Nate (Nick Mohammed) was right there, having coaching experience in another top League team. However, Roy’s growth is not without merit and meaning, but it creates opportunities for the future.

Like the players themselves, the coaches also make up the team. The dynamics between the two have the biggest impact on how players play on the pitch, and that was clear in the series. But while Beard (Brendan Hunt) was knowledgeable, Roy experienced, and Nate creative, it was Ted who ultimately chose the tactics and served as the link between this team. He was the nervous system of the body AFK Richmond, regulating all vital functions.

Now, however, the team needs to keep going, and while the plan to make Roy the leader seems solid enough, we’re still curious to see how it pans out. He’s certainly been most influenced by Ted’s inspiring presence and has grown a lot over the course of the series, but he’s still Roy. It’s still hard for him to do things without getting in his way, and there must be some level of tension since Nate has more experience than he does. It’s not that Nate is bad, we know he’s not, but we also know that he’s overly ambitious and influenced by what the media says. That alone should be enough to keep someone interested and fuel an entire series.

More ‘Ted Lasso’ means more Rebecca and Keely, the women’s team and fan-made Richmond

Luckily, RebeccaHannah Waddingham) changed her mind about selling AFC Richmond with Ted gone. She is brilliant as a manager and gives the insight that football (and the sport in general) desperately needs. Not only has she risen to the position of owner through her own merit, she now understands that the most important thing in football is the fans. So much so that she sold them 49% ownership of the club, though what that means no one can be sure of.

Rebecca’s position as the “mother” of the Richmond community must play an important role in this new form of government. And since then Ted Lasso likes to use real football as inspiration, there is even a precedent for this, since one of the best teams in the Bundesliga (German national league), Union Berlin, is 100% fan-owned. Richmond’s “hybrid” system is not only new, but could be an interesting premise for the show, especially with Keely (Juno Temple) is on board promoting the women’s team, which is also another idea home run and craziness that we know is inherent in Richmond fans.

One thing Ted Lasso never lacked ideas for plots. It’s clear that Ted’s story has come to an end as his arc is complete and Jason Sudeikis certainly has the right to move on after staying with such a great role for years. But when it comes to the series’ universe, there are plenty of possibilities, and it would be a shame not to explore them further. We loved and believed in Ted. We still love and believe in Richmond. This must go on.
