Since Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012, the road to expansion star Wars The universe was not smooth. They seem to have found their place in the Disney+ series. The Mandalorian stands out as a success, and Ahsoka receiving written processing by creator Dave Filoni himself. But the films tell a different story. The ubiquitous planning for a sequel trilogy resulted in it having the lowest rated episode in the saga: Rise of Skywalker. Most recently films to be made Kevin Feige And Patty Jenkins have been postponed. Going back a bit, since the sequel trilogy was announced, an anthology series was planned to bring the main episodes together, but only two films were released under that title. History of Star Wars banner: Rogue One And Solo. While the former is considered one of the best Star Wars films, the latter’s response has been more tepid.
IN Solo, Alden Ehrenreich depicts a young Khan who has not yet received his last name. His mentor TobiasWoody Harrelson) and his love interest, Kira (Emilia Clarke) allies who betray him in the end, while the ferocious Wookiee Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo) and suspicious player Lando (Donald Glover) turn out to be someone he can trust. As the film ends with the lively return of beloved villain Darth Maul (Ray Park) and Khan heads off to meet Jabba the Hutt, the intentions to launch his own saga were crystal clear. It may have hurt the film’s performance, but most of the drama took place behind the scenes. To say that the production process was problematic is an understatement.
How did Solo turn into a movie?
Let’s start from the very beginning. In 2012, George Lucas agreed for Lawrence Kasdan to develop a script for a Han Solo movie. After being acquired by Disney, the project faced its first minor setback as Kasdan was forced to leave the project to become a co-writer. The Force Awakens leaving a son Jonathan Kasdanresponsible for its completion. It moved Solo from first anthology film to release after Rogue One. By the end of 2015 Phil Miller And Christopher Lord were chosen by the film’s director. This duo previously led Cloudy with a chance of meatballs, 21 Jump StreetAnd Lego Movieso the idea of the film as a heist comedy wasn’t all that far-fetched.
By mid-2016, Ehrenreich was cast as Khan. Being Solo the icon he is and should fill Harrison Fordshoes, the reactions were unsurprisingly varied. The shortlist also included KingsmanX Taron Egerton And Sing StreetX Jack Raynor. But Ehrenreich was not a newcomer - he had already starred in Beautiful creatures, blue jasmine and critically acclaimed Hello Caesar!, with very contrasting roles. He certainly was able to embody the sarcasm and recklessness characteristic of smugglers.
Solo had problems with the director
Filming began in early 2017 and took place at Pinewood Studios, select locations in Italy and the Canary Islands. It is reported that the manufacturer Kathleen Kennedy and executive producer Lawrence Kasdan were not happy with Lord and Miller’s comedic approach. The process had to be put on hold and revised about five months into filming and just three weeks before completion. Citing traditional “creative differences”, Lord and Miller were unceremoniously fired. The actors were surprised by the decision and apparently had no idea it was coming.
Only two days later Ron Howard was announced as the new director and extensive reshoots began. Howard reportedly had to reshoot approximately 70% of the film, making Solo one of the most expensive films ever made. Getting it done in time for the film to be ready for release in May 2018 was no easy task, but Howard somehow pulled it off. Consequently, Lord and Miller’s credit as directors was terminated, leaving them only as executive producers.
‘Solo’ has undergone many casting changes
Michael K. Williams was originally supposed to play Dryden Vos, the villain of the film. Vos’s scenes, intended to be a human/animal hybrid, had to be reshot in accordance with Howard’s vision for the film. Because Williams was committed to filming Diving resort on the Red Sea in South Africa it was physically impossible for him to be available. Paul Bettanywho had previously worked with Howard took over the role and the character was restructured to be mostly human with some scars here and there.
Darth Maul made a surprise appearance at the end of the movie. Ray Park reprized his physical role as the villain and Peter Serafinowicz was determined to voice it again, as he did in Episode I - The Phantom Menace. Serafinowicz stated on a Collider podcast that he even recorded his lines after meeting Howard. Ultimately, it was decided that Sam Witwer will provide the voice of Maul to match his latest appearances in the animated series. clone wars And rebels.
Two other appearances were cut from the film. Scene featuring fan-favorite duo Tag Greenlee and Bink Otown, played by Jonathan Kasdan himself and Toby Heffermanrespectively, was cut out. Tag and Bink first appeared in a 2001 parody comic. Tag and Bink are dead. In their stories in the comics, they heavily influenced the main character arcs, but in a comedic form. Eventually, the option to make them canon was dropped.
Despite the behind-the-scenes drama and uneven storytelling, Howard knew how to work with what he had and what the studio wanted to create. Solo a solid film that deserves another viewing. This provided the basis for Falcon programming thanks to Phoebe Waller-Bridgerevolutionary droid L3-37. He showed the Kessel run in all points, covered “in less than twelve parsecs.” And it details how Khan met his longtime ally Lando Calrissian in one of Glover’s finest performances. But however redeeming these qualities may be, it is true Solo ended with a cautionary tale about how much pressure there is when trying to tell the story of an outdated character these days. It would be interesting to see what the planned sequels have in store for Khan and his team, but for now, we’re left wondering what that might look like.
