7 Adrian Lovell

Joseph Fiennes plays Adrian Lovell, a former Marine who was romantically involved with Mother along with business partner Hector. When the Mother found out about the disgusting dark side of their business, she ratted them out, angering Adrian, who is now on a never-ending quest for revenge on the Mother.

Adrian takes on the role of the main antagonist in the latter half of the film after Hector’s downfall. However, from a villain’s point of view, he is much less convincing than his partner in crime. Although he does many shocking things that make him a major threat right after his introduction, he is a character who is only defined by his actions and lacks an attractive personality.

6 Tarantula

A still from Mother, featuring Jesse Garcia's Tarantula lying on the ground in pain and disappointment.

Jesse Garcia plays Tarantula, a senior lieutenant working under Hector and one of the men directly involved in Zoe’s kidnapping. He is the first person that Mother and Cruz use to find out the whereabouts of Hector and Zoe. This leads to one of the most iconic scenes in the film, where the Mother interrogates and tortures the Tarantula for information.

While Tarantula doesn’t initially make much of an impression with his initial appearance, appearing to be nothing more than a regular underling of a villain, his character shines more in his second appearance. His torment and bitterness back and forth with Mother during his interrogation and torture adds much character and says a lot about the kind of person he is. Although he does not appear in the film for a long time, his final scene and his gruesome death leave an impression on the audience.

5 Hector Alvarez

Gael Garcia Bernalperhaps best known for his role in the MCU short film. Werewolf at night, plays Hector Alvarez, the other half of the main antagonist duo with Adrian, who shares a previous romantic relationship with The Mother. Right from the start, Hector is an arms dealer and he is able to send his men and capture Zoe to get Mother out of hiding before Adrian.

Despite having significantly fewer scenes than his counterpart, Hector is a far more interesting and attractive villain between him and Adrian. His confrontation with Mother in his home is filled with such drama and energy, and Bernal’s performance is the perfect mix of frightening and over the top to make the villain work.

4 William Cruz

Omari Hardwick plays FBI Special Agent William Cruz, who is first seen interrogating Mother when she first ratted out Adrian and Hector. The interrogation goes awry and every other agent present is killed, but Mother is able to save Cruz’s life and a friendship and bond develops between the two after the fact. Cruz is the person who first contacts Mother to inform her of the impending danger that Zoe is in.

Cruz creates an interesting and dynamic case with Mother, as although he was also on the front line, he is clearly out of his depth compared to what Mother went through. This creates an interesting and effective dynamic between the two, where we see their relationship develop both indirectly and during their partnership in search of Hector in Cuba. Cruz’s death in the middle of the film at the hands of Adrian makes for one of the most emotional scenes in the film, as both Mother and the audience truly appreciate his presence.

3 Jones

Paul Rasi plays the role of Jones, Mother’s former army colleague who lodges Mother in a remote cabin in Alaska after the events of her FBI interrogation. Jones is Mother’s main companion during the twelve years she spends on the run, and also when she returns to Alaska with Zoe to train her while hiding from Adrian.

Rachi plays the role of Jones perfectly, playing a sweet old war veteran who keeps to himself but is ready to help his closest friend in need. His guidance and supervision of Mother during her twelve years on the run and after she and Zoe returned to Alaska help to show his good-hearted nature. It takes considerable effort to make the image of a wise old man work in modern cinema, but Racha’s performance is completely consistent with the character and archetype.

2 Mother

Jennifer Lopez is rarely known for her action roles, and she has never before played such a cold and calculating role as Mother. Hardened by army battles, Mother is distinguished by her conviction and willingness to get the job done, no matter the cost, which is evident throughout the film. From giving up her daughter to giving her a normal life, to spending the rest of her days in the harsh winters of Alaska, there is nothing Mother won’t do.

There is a difficulty with a character like the Mother, as the film runs the risk of portraying the character as so cold that it will alienate her and make her less appealing to the audience. However, the film can showcase Mother’s bitter attitude in a myriad of effective ways, from her cold and unfeeling lack of human connection to her gruesome combat tactics. Lopez plays the character with enough confidence that it’s hard for the viewer not to support Mother when things go wrong.

1 Zoe

Luzy Paes plays Zoey, Mother’s young daughter who lived a normal life before being forced into an ongoing conflict between Mother and her past. Initially nothing more than an ultimate goal and a person Mother must save, Mother is soon forced to take Zoe under her wing and quickly train her in combat before Adrian discovers them.

Zoe’s addition to the film and the dynamic with Mother adds a lot of light and humanity to the film as a whole. Fitting perfectly with Mother’s hardened soldier mentality, Zoe lived a normal life, and Zoe’s exposure to this harsh and harsh world was a culture shock. It takes her some time to adjust to the way Mother operates, but eventually he can connect with her biological mother in a way she never thought possible.
