Editor’s Note: The following are spoilers for Episode 8, Season 2 of The Yellow Jackets. When season 2 yellow jackets was announced, the creators promised that we would get answers to some of our burning questions from the first season. So far, they’ve kept that promise, addressing and answering the things we’ve longed to know. But it turns out there’s a lot more to discover - things we didn’t even know needed to be explained, but were brilliantly predicted to come to life here in Season 2. And it all comes down to a deck of cards.
How is the Queen of Hearts in Yellow Vests?
More in episode 8 yellow jackets In season 1 we see Travis (Kevin Alves) sitting at the table and playing a deck of cards when Natalie (Sophie Thatcher) enters and informs him that there are no queens in the deck. It seems like an unnecessary phrase, just a placeholder dialogue to make the scene feel natural and real, but it turns out there was a lot more to that phrase than we ever thought. In an interview with Collider, showrunner Ashley Lyle showed that this was a deliberate line, although at the time we did not know what it meant or what it foreshadowed. So far, we’ve only seen a couple of card-related things, one of which was the team using a deck of cards to assign responsibilities. The other is during the opening credits of the show, where we see two cards: the Queen of Diamonds and the Queen of Hearts with their eyes crossed out.
However, on a larger scale, there was a moment in the second season, in the fourth episode, in which we see Lottie (Simone Kessel) looking through the records of the members of her complex. She’s looking through them, smiling at all the positive things these people have written down, when she suddenly stumbles upon a Queen of Hearts playing card with its eyes scratched out. But then again, it doesn’t feel like the moment that was predicted, although it’s certainly creepy. But the moment has finally arrived in Episode 8, and it’s a lot more tense than we could have imagined.
The Queen of Hearts foreshadowed the sacrificial scene in the second season of “Yellow Vests”
After Shauna (Sophie Nelisse) brutal release of anger at Lottie (Courtney Eaton), the latter in a crude form, so much so that it must be held in order to pee. And things don’t look good, as there is blood in her urine, indicating an infection in her kidneys. Not to mention, her face is swollen beyond recognition, and her body is probably just as bad. Withering rapidly and severely due to lack of professional medical attention and starvation, Lottie tells Misty (Samantha Hanratty) that if she dies, they shouldn’t waste her body. The show resorted to cannibalism early in the season when they ate Jackie (Ella Purnell), so the question is never if they’re going to do it again, but just when - and by whom? However, Lottie does have a rather spiritual role in the group, whether her naysayers want to admit it or not, so her request is not taken lightly. But they are starving, so they need to do something to survive.
This is where the Queen of Hearts comes into play. Taissa (Jasmine Savoy Brown) says they need to find a way to stay alive, but it can’t be eating Lottie. We then see the team gathered around the animal’s skull like Wang (Liv Hewson) shuffles a deck of cards. The reason for this is unclear at first, but judging by the eerie silence and pale expressions on everyone’s faces, whatever is happening is not good. Wang shows off a card that will be decisive, and that is, of course, the Queen of Hearts. One by one, each person draws a card from the deck, and as the deck gets closer and closer to Natalie, they begin to realize that she is likely to be the chosen one - of course, whatever the chosen one entails still remains questionable. . Of course, she unsteadily pulls out a scary card, and we finally understand what happens when she steps into the middle of the circle: they were choosing a victim.
Wearing Jackie’s heart necklace, Shauna brings the knife to her throat and prepares to cut it. Nat tells her that she will have to look her in the eyes when she does, and it’s an incredibly tense moment despite the fact that we know Natalie survives. Travis suddenly snaps and knocks Shauna down before she can finish the job and tells Natalie to run. She does, and we’re suddenly back to the first season, where the crew was tripping over mushrooms and wanted to have dinner with Travis. Natalie clearly survives (R.I.P Javi(Luciano Leroux)) But this does not mean that she is without injuries.
We know that the Yellowjackets have lost contact and are avoiding each other at almost any cost, but we have yet to find out exactly why this happened. It is always mentioned that “we did terrible things there” but they never told us what the terrible things were. But now it’s probably safe to assume that this moment played a role in it. Eventually, the team went completely berserk as they chased Natalie through the woods. She was no longer their friend, she was food, and they were starving. It’s not like Jackie’s situation when she died from the elements, and they can’t blame the hallucinations caused by the mushrooms. It’s a full scale blood hunt and it’s horrendous.
It is also likely that this is playing on Travis (Andres Soto) and Natalie (Juliette Lewis) relationship after the wild. Xavi is his brother, so the fact that he’s not only dead and the team’s next meal, but also died for Natalie, should leave an emotional scar. We also know that Natalie struggles deeply with guilt, and watching Javi drown and calling her name specifically for help isn’t exactly something you can handle easily. Not to mention, Travis and Natalie finally made up right before it all came crashing down after being at each other’s throats for most of the season - and Xavi to boot.
It’s such a brutal and tragic moment, and for a line that felt like nothing, it certainly paid off hugely, and while it’s hard to watch, it’s truly brilliant. An omen so mundane and subtle that you don’t think about it, and yet it will certainly change the lives of these characters forever. Path, yellow jacketsyou did it again.
