Exceeding expectations for a record-breaking debut weekend, Universal’s Movie Super Mario Bros. again beat forecasts as it enters its second week of release. The blockbuster animated video game adaptation is estimated to have grossed $87 million in its sophomore weekend, about 10% higher than estimated just a couple of days ago.
This brings the film to a total domestic revenue of $347.8 million and a phenomenal $678 million worldwide in less than two full weeks of release. Super Mario debuted on Wednesday and earned a staggering $204 million domestically for its extended five-day debut. It broke the record for the biggest video game movie opening and the biggest opening of any movie in 2023. Super Mario is already the highest-grossing film of the year (to date), and last week it overtook warcraft ($439 million) to become the highest-grossing video game adaptation at the worldwide box office.
In the performance of voices Chris Pratt And Charlie Day, Super Mario marks another box office success for Illumination, the animation company behind global blockbuster franchises such as despicable Me And Sing. And at this rate, it’s almost guaranteed to be the third Illumination film to cross the $1 billion mark worldwide.
There have been many new releases hitting the market this week with mixed results. Second place went to the horror film Screen Gems. papal exorciststarring Russell Crowe like a dead father Gabriele Amort, who claimed to have performed hundreds of thousands of exorcisms during his career. Director Julius Averythe film grossed an estimated $9.1 million in its opening weekend.
Third place went to a relic John Wick: Chapter 4, which is estimated to have earned $7.9 million this weekend, bringing its current net worth to around $160 million. The well-received sequel has been positioned as the latest installment in the unlikely blockbuster franchise, but recent chatter suggests there could be another installment on the cards besides the numerous spin-offs already in various stages of production. Starring Keanu Reeves, John Wick 4 recently passed the $300 million mark worldwide and is expected to surpass John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum become the most profitable franchise game in the world.
“Renfield” Came under expectations
John Wick 4 nearly overtaken this week’s other big hit, Universal’s horror comedy Renfield. A modern reimagining of the Dracula legend with nothing less than Nicolas Cage as a cult character, having lost an estimated $7.7 million on its debut weekend. After The Unbearable Weight of a Huge Talentit is Cage’s second film in the last couple of years to attempt to capitalize on his flamboyant personality, but was disappointing at the box office. Renfield fights Ben AffleckX Air for fourth place. The acclaimed sports comedy grossed $33 million domestically. Elsewhere Ari Astaire Bo is afraid performed at four theaters in New York and Los Angeles and delivered the best average per theater since 2019. Uncut Gems. Japanese anime icon Makoto ShinkaiX Suzume debuted with approximately $5 million after having already grossed over $250 million worldwide.
