Just a few months after the director Damien Chazelle reveals his chaotic vision of Old Hollywood in epic film BabylonIndian director Vikramaditya Motwane is ready to bring viewers back to the golden era of Bollywood with his new Hindi series Anniversary. It’s scheduled to premiere on Prime Video next month, with the show’s first trailer released on Friday.
The action takes place in newly independent India in 1947. Anniversary has been described as a tale of “passion, ambition and love”. It chronicles the life of “a studio boss, his movie star wife, trusted assistant, rising star, research girl, and refugee.” The story seems to take place in and around the fictional Roy Talkies studio, where several characters cross paths, often with violent ends. Anniversary does not give a rosy view of the film industry; instead, it feels almost like a noir thriller with an added frivolity. The closest comparison can actually be Ed Brubaker And Sean PhillipsThe Fade Out comic series.
Film industry in Anniversary shown as a hotbed of vice where jealousy and ambition collide when a starlet begins an affair with a promising heartthrob. Her jealous husband hires a thug to investigate, while a nasty studio boss lashes out at everyone by playing God. The charm of vintage Mumbai - or Bombay, as it was then called - was recreated with a combination of practical decorations and a digital environment. Viewers will be transported to the stylish jazz clubs of the era, Art Deco theaters and spacious studios. We also get a lot of glimpses of Mumbai’s tropical landscape and feel the socio-economic upheavals that were in the air. Post-independence India was a land of opportunity where formerly oppressed people found they could follow their dreams.
