Throughout its first season, the series was praised for its faithfulness to its source material and consistently delighted viewers. In a feat we’ve become accustomed to, the season finale broke its own viewership record set last week. With an audience of 8.2 million tuned in to watch the season wrap up, the show continues its habit of continually growing its audience with each episode. The number of viewers for episode 9 is even more impressive when you consider that the 2023 Oscars were broadcast on the same night.
The penultimate episode of the series, “When We’re in Need”, previously held the record for most viewed series prior to the finale, with 8.1 million viewers. Last of us was an immediate hit, with its January premiere attracting 4.7 million viewers, and numbers, as highlighted earlier, continued to rise throughout the season. Compared to the finale, the new series increased by 75% compared to the premiere.
In the season finale, an Oscar was given as a competition for the night, and his performance is to be commended. However, this isn’t the first time the series has had to fend off competition from other major events.
