When Netflix’s amazing Regency drama Bridgerton Waltzing on stage three years ago, he was immediately praised for his varied performance. Immediately standing out from most historical dramas, the show made a splash by highlighting the Black Queen in the form of Queen Charlotte at the center of the story (Golda Rochevel).
On the back Brigerton the brilliant success of the mastermind of the series Shonda Rhimes and author of the original book series Julia Quinn teamed up in the prequel Queen Charlotte: The Bridgerton Story, which will be released both as a series and as an entirely new novel. ahead Queen Charlotte: The Bridgerton StoryAt the opening of the original Royal Rochevel, the celebration of black history became part of history.
The plot tells about the epic love story of the young Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz.India Amarteifio) and the young King George III (Corey Milkchrist). Their marriage marks a tonal shift in society and inevitably brings young monarchs to face a series of trials. Speaking about how history explores representation, Rochevel told Digital Spy:
“I think, especially in the world we live in right now, the celebration of black history is really very important, and through a female protagonist, a female historical character. I think it’s really cool and beautiful and right and it’s an extraordinary story because like we said it’s love which I think is very rare And to know that these two people were infatuated with each other very very - way back in the 18th century, and they wanted to be together, and they were a mixed couple, you know, and they wanted to celebrate it, and the great experiment happened.”
The passion that Rochevel describes shapes what is to be an incredibly dramatic story in true royal romantic style. According to the synopsis, the young queen will have to face not only the fact that Charlotte’s new husband holds deep-seated secrets that can “shake the very foundations of the monarchy”, but also several problems of her own. Rhimes previously said Sunday Times how she “has everything she could want, but she suffers inside.” Although painfully vague, it is hoped that the upcoming story will explain the softer side of Queen Charlotte that viewers have seen amidst her very tough personality throughout the main series.
The spin-off comes after a hugely successful second season for Bridgerton. With an impressive 193 million hours watched in its opening weekend, the show climbed into the Netflix top ten in a staggering 92 countries. The series earned applause for its vivid portrayal of South Asian women through a fiery romance between Viscount Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey) and Keith Sharma (Simone Ashley). Both Kate and her younger sister Edwina Sharma (Charitra Chandran) have been portrayed as bright, bold and intelligent characters, drawing the attention of some of the globally acclaimed positive mainstream in the South Asian community.
Queen Charlotte: The Bridgerton Story will air on Netflix on May 4th, with a new version hitting bookshelves shortly thereafter on May 9th. You can watch the trailer for the upcoming series below.
