Netflix, long known for its deep dives into some of the most prolific true crime stories in history, has announced the theme of its next documentary series. Waco: American Apocalypse will be released on the streamer in three parts on March 22, 2023 and will tell the story of one of the most infamous showdowns between the cult and the United States government. Waco events unfolded back in 1993 in a Texas town where the cult leader David Koresh and his followers, known as the Branch Davidians, resided. The church was an offshoot of the Seventh-day Adventists, and Koresh jumped at the opportunity to claim he was the true Messiah. Although the government had been watching the cult for some time, the tragic events that have now become synonymous with the city of Waco began one morning in February 1993. Alcohol, tobacco and firearms laid siege to the complex where the religious sect lived.
What would unfold over the next 51 days was an all-out war in which Koresh forced his people to oppose the government. With the help of a stockpile of weapons and ammunition, the Branch Davidians did just that and managed to hold back federal agents in the event that both sides suffered numerous losses. In the end, the complex caught fire, and this is still discussed, and this whole terrible event is played out on news channels around the world.
Russell will use previously unseen news footage and FBI footage, as well as interviews with those who witnessed the tragedy, to shape his vision of history. Gathering information from both sides, the docuseries will feature the stories of one of Koresh’s spiritual wives, the last child to escape the compound before it was destroyed, an FBI sniper, an FBI crisis negotiator, and more. In a statement released with the announcement, Russell says his project will not “place blame or point fingers” but rather take a deeper look at “how people on all sides feel when they are in the jaws of history.” “.
Waco: American Apocalypse is the latest on Netflix’s True Crime list to have recently released scripted hits including Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story and similar cult documentaries such as Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey.
