It’s a 90’s show makes the children of the 90s cloud their eyes, remembering It’s a 70’s show, of which it serves as a continuation. Meanwhile, the Netflix sitcom has attracted a whole new generation of viewers eager to see what happens when 15-year-old Leah spends the summer with her grandparents at her father’s childhood home in her parents’ hometown.
There is something exciting about the 90s that makes this a popular decade for television. This is the decade when the trends shaping today’s culture began to emerge, from pagers and mobile phones to iconic musicians and songs, TV shows and fashion. AND It’s a 90’s show is not the only series that perfectly captures the retro period.
1 “The 90s Show” (2023 -)
It’s a 90’s show introduces fans to the life of Leah, daughter of Eric and Donna from It’s a 70’s show summer with grandparents, Red and Kitty Foreman. She meets new friends she spends time with in Foreman’s iconic basement, only now, two decades later. There are several cameos from some of the funniest characters from It’s a 70’s shownow in their late 30s.
Lots of 90s references including raves, grunge fashion (like when Nate likes Red’s old plaid shirt), Beverly Hills, 90210, and even the video rental shops where young Jay Kelso works. One of the most iconic scenes from the 90s, however, is when Kitty and Red get their first computer and Ozzy tries to help them connect to the internet, squealing when dialing and all that.
2 “Goldbergs” (2013–) and “School” (2019–2020)
Every Episode Goldbergs starts off with “that was sometime in the 1980s” but it’s clear that now, in its 10th season, the show has long since moved into the 1990s. Many of the references made, clothing and other trends are clearly from that decade. An example is an episode that mentions The Incredible Adventures of Bill and Ted, which was released in 1989, just before the start of a new decade.
Goldbergs did produce a special 90s-themed episode during Season 5 that was meant to serve as an introduction to the spin-off. Schoolwhich he honed in the 90s. Schoolhowever, only lasted two seasons before being cancelled.
3 ‘Young Sheldon’ (2017 -)
Hugely popular prequel series to The Big Bang Theory, Young Sheldon gives insight into the early life of Sheldon Cooper and his family in Texas. Precocious, intelligent and often arrogant, Sheldon was much the same, even during key years of his growing up.
The story begins in the late 80s but moves into the 90s with many references to that time, such as references to Radio Shack, Sheldon’s first computer, Georgie’s love for Who is in charge?and Missy’s penchant for magazines like Bold.
4 ‘Pose’ (2018 - 2021)
Second season Pose starts in the 90s. Set in New York during the LGBTQ subculture of the city’s ballroom scene, dancers and models compete in underground circles for trophies and recognition, supporting each other through the trials and tribulations of the era, such as HIV and AIDS. This is one of the many LGBTQ+ shows featuring close-knit groups of friends.
Season 2 is set exactly in 1990 with a dance style true to the decade: wogging. Meanwhile, the third season begins in 1993, with Mayor Rudy Giuliani fighting to stop prostitutes in the city. The show combines other real events such as OJ Simpson case as well.
5 “Fresh off the Boat” (2015–2020)
Louis and Constance Huang are raising their three children in 1990s Florida, where Taiwanese Americans own and operate a steakhouse in the city. The story is loosely based on the real-life childhood of the now famous chef and deli. Eddie Huang.
Along with showing the trends of the time, Fresh off the boat was praised for being the first American network television sitcom to feature an Asian American family as its main characters. Staged in a style similar to shows like Goldbergs, Fresh off the boat gives a fresh picture of a time before kids were distracted by the internet and social media.
6 “Girls from Derry” (2018–2022)
The action takes place in Northern Ireland in the 90s. Derry Girls was praised for its realistic depiction of the events and worldview of the time, and for its 90s-oriented soundtrack full of the best tunes of the decade. Inspired by the experience of the creator of the show Lisa McGeeBritish sitcom about five teenagers and their stories of growing up while studying at a Catholic high school.
Some of the relevant 90s events covered throughout the show’s three seasons include the 1994 IRA ceasefire announcement, US President Bill Clintona visit to Ireland in 1995 and the 1998 Good Friday referendum. The general look of the 90s is supported by real footage from various events, as well as music by artists such as Ace Of Base, Cypress Hill And cranberry.
7 “Everything sucks!” (2018)
Fans were dumbfounded when Everything sucks!, one of the best coming-of-age shows on Netflix, was canceled after just one season. Another throwback series, the comedy-drama follows a group of teenagers in high school at a pivotal moment in their lives. Set in the mid-90s, the characters deal with issues that still exist today, including mental health and sexuality. But very much in the spirit of the 90s.
From high school AV club to VHS, ’90s fashion, spicy magazines tucked away in the garage, and blockbusters, references to the ’90s are extensive.
8 ‘City on a Hill’ (2019 - 2022)
Based on a story written Ben Affleck, Kevin Bacon stars in City on a hill as John “Jackie” Rohr, a retired FBI agent who works with an assistant district attorney on a case that could change the criminal justice system forever. But Jackie was a corrupt agent, like many at the time.
Set in 1990s Boston, the city was plagued by violence, racism, and police corruption at the time. Show references mostly fit Boston of the time, but City on a hill itself is very similar to the 90s.
9 ‘Clarice’ (2021)
Silence of the Lambs was one of the biggest films of the 90s and one of the many interpretations of the Hannibal Lecter character. So it’s no surprise that a crime drama Clarice The action takes place in the same era. Indeed, the story is also based on this 1991 film as well as the novel Thomas Harris.
Clarice Starling is an FBI agent who, after being traumatized by serial killer Buffalo Bill and incarcerated killer Dr. Hannibal Lecter, was placed on administrative leave. However, she is pulled back when the mother of the killer’s only surviving victim enlists Clarice to help join her vigilante team hunting murderers, serial killers, and sexual predators. As a sequel to the film, the timeline is true to the original, which means that fashion, furnishings, and technology are all from that decade.
10 “Yellow Vests” (2021 -)
Flipping back and forth between today and the 90s yellow jackets This is a thriller drama about a group of women who are stranded on a remote island for 19 months after a car accident. Left to their own devices, the women continue to grapple with what happened to them over this nearly two-year period, keeping most of the details to themselves.
However, as old truths begin to surface, the grown-up women come together again to figure out how to move forward and deal with the traumas they’ve been hiding for so long.
