The 43rd London Critics’ Circle Film Awards took place at The May Fair Hotel on Sunday, and the leaders of the event were Banshee of Inisherina And Tar. The first received five awards, the second - three. The London Critics’ Circle Awards are presented by the 200 strong members of the Critics’ Circle, the UK’s oldest film critics’ organization.

The biggest prize at the London Film Critics Awards 2023 was Film of the Year, which went to Tar. Director’s tense drama Todd Field - who also won the Director of the Year award - Stars Cate Blanchett starring Lydia Tar, a world-famous composer whose personal struggles begin to intersect with her professional life. Blanchett received her third award for the film as “Actress of the Year”, marking the third time she had won the London Critics’ Circle award. Blanchett previously received the award for her performances in Elizabeth And blue jasmine.

The other big winner of the London Critcs’ Circle Film Awards was Banshee of Inisherina, which was in the lead, being the recognized winner in five categories. The black comedy about two friends who go through a disastrous breakup on a small island off Ireland in the 1920s won the Attenborough Award for British-Irish Film of the Year, as well as Screenwriter of the Year for Martin McDonaghwho also directed the film. Banshee of Inisherinathe other three awards were presented Colin Farrell in the nominations “Actor of the Year”, “Supporting Actor” and “Supporting Actress” for Barry Keoghan And Kerry Condon respectively.

Other notable winners of the evening were Bill Nighy And Florence Pugh. Nighy and Pugh were recognized as the best British-Irish actors and actresses for their contributions to cinema in 2022. Nighy won the award for his lead role in the film Lifewhile Pugh has been noted for several performances, one opposite Harry Styles in director Olivia WildeX Don’t worry dear and the rest in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish And Miracle.

Both Blanchett and Tar and Farrell and Banshee of Inisherina are contenders for the Oscars in 2023, and at the London Critics’ Circle Awards, another contender for the Oscars received a big prize, namely Michelle Yeoh. Yeoh plays the lead role All Everywhere All at once - which earned her a host of awards and nominations this awards season - and brought home the Dilys Powell Award for Excellence in Film, presented to her by the iconic British director. Danny Boyle. The last of the main categories was a draw, both The decision to leave And Quiet girl won the Foreign Language Film of the Year award. Will all of these winners succeed at the UK’s premier film awards ceremony, the BAFTA, on 19 February?
