While Hugh grant was once a generational romantic idol thanks to his roles in romantic classics such as About a boy Four weddings and one funeral Real love and notting hilland just to name a few, in the last few years of his career he has managed to completely reinvent himself as a playful character actor. Grant seems to be just goofing around, as evidenced by his ridiculously scene-chewing moments in Paddington 2. In the sweet family sequel, Grant plays the self-deprecating role of a movie star who is secretly a master thief. It’s a fun role that proclaimed that Grant was ready to make fun of himself, but he almost got the same opportunity two decades ago when he was briefly considered for a role in the film. Harry Potter franchise.

COLLIDER VIDEO OF THE DAY

Grant was in talks to play Gilderoy Lockhart, the mischievous Defense Against the Dark Arts professor in the second film. Harry Potter And The Chamber of secrets. Lockhart is a famous wizard who is basically a celebrity, and his charm is enough to earn him a place among the Hogwarts professors. However, it was ultimately revealed that despite his bold statements and epic stories, Lockhart’s skills are performative. He’s just a con artist with no real magical powers and he can’t save HarryDaniel Radcliffe) at several critical moments.

Grant was unable to take part in the highly anticipated sequel due to his romantic comedy commitments. Two weeks notice With Sandra Bullock. The role eventually went to another British heartthrob when Kenneth Branagh was cast as Lockhart and delivered an incredibly funny performance that was truly unlike anything a Shakespearean actor had ever done before. While it was a great opportunity for Branagh to show his range and add a bit of theatricality to the franchise, it’s hard not to wonder how sly and goofy the version could look with Grant in the role. While it’s a bit of a shame we’ll never see Grant as a Defense Against the Dark Arts instructor, his role as Phoenix Buchanan in Paddington 2 probably the closest we’ll ever get.

Similar characters

Both characters are performers, but not necessarily in the field they claim to work in. They both earn their positions out of necessity and use their charisma to take on responsibilities for which they are not prepared. After the events of Philosopher’s StoneHogwarts is in desperate need of a new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher after it was revealed that Quirinus Quirrell (Ian Hart) was just a pawn of the Dark Lord Voldemort. What better way to save face, assuage the fears of wizarding parents, and engage students in the curriculum than by hiring a famous author who has written many popular books about his great adventures?

Similarly, Buchanan is a selfish actor who boasts about his reverence in this area. Even the kind Paddington Bear (voiced by Ben Whishaw) is observant enough to note that Buchanan has no real talents, and that he has sunk to the point of performing at carnivals and festivals instead of anything that requires serious commitment. It quickly became clear that Buchanan’s acting career was a hoax of sorts; he is a secret master burglar who has his eye on an expensive book and he brutally framed an innocent bear for the crime by putting him in jail.

chewing scenery

Branagh chews on the landscape, telling the students about her adventures, but seems to forget to give them any real lessons. It’s especially funny to see him get under the skin of various skeptics on the Hogwarts staff, especially Professor Severus Snape (Alan Rickman), who wishes to become a Defense Against the Dark Arts professor for himself. As with Buchanan, even Harry and Ron don’t take long (Rupert Grint) admit that Lockhart is a charlatan.

After questioning Harry’s claims about the Weasley flying machine, Lockhart tries to heal Harry from a broken leg sustained during a Quidditch match. His prank is revealed when Lockhart, instead of sticking the bone together, disappears. How could such an experienced adventurer not perform a simple spell? It would be interesting if Grant was in that scene, bringing the same physical comedy and awkwardness he showed in Paddington 2.

Paddington 2 Hugh Grant PrisonJustice has triumphed

The similarities between Buchanan and Lockhart persist as they both meet their fate at the hands of children. Their best friend was jailed for a crime he didn’t commit, JudyMadeline Harris) and Jonathan Brown (Samuel Joslin) to investigate the links between Buchanan and the missing book. They realize with horror that Buchanan is not only responsible for this theft; he made a career out of stealing luxury goods. Paddington is just another victim of his deception.

Harry and Ron are equally shocked when Lockhart tries to escape Hogwarts after being called to save Ginny Weasley (Bonnie Wright) from the Chamber of Secrets. They realize that Lockhart’s boast is a lie, and that he never actually did any of the things he claimed in his books. Like Lockhart, he is shallow and selfish, and is willing to endanger innocent people instead of taking any risk. While Branagh has a funny bluntness during this scene, it would be funny to see Grant forced to take responsibility. moment in Paddington 2 When he was sentenced to ten years in prison, Grant played out a similar scenario.

It’s also fun to imagine what Grant could have done to Lockhart’s fate at the end of the movie, when he has his memory erased and walks around like a confused child with a sense of newfound joy. Grant’s incredible musical number at the end Paddington 2 when he befriends his new comrades in prison, he displays the same sense of hilarious idiocy and acceptance.

There are many actors being considered for roles in the Wizarding World, and while the franchise’s cast is nearly flawless, it’s always interesting to look at the different scenarios. While Branagh could display his comedic skills like never before, it would be fun to see Grant poking fun at his popularity at the height of his fame. Even if that self-awareness was delayed until later in his career, Grant finally showed us what his Lockhart would have been like in Paddington 2.
