M3GAN is kind, sweet and full of personality. She’s a best friend, a great companion, and a “fizzy shining beam of light”…until she goes crazy and does her job in a whole new way. Ahead of the film’s release on January 6, Bloody Disgusting unveiled an exclusive M3GAN A featurette showcasing the cast, crew and director of the upcoming horror movie, and their take on a doll that could knock Chucky and Anabelle out of the fight for the creepiest doll in the horror genre.
The short began with M3GAN introducing himself and then moving on to the film’s cast. Allison Williams, Violet McGraw, Ronnie Chiengand Jen Van Eppstogether with director Gerard Johnston and M3GAN manufacturers Jason Blume and James Wan, all of whom had nothing but positive to say, saying that the realistic doll is “bright and iconic” but also “weird and constantly unsettling”. After all, M3GAN is originally a prototype robot designed to help Gemma (Williams) deal with the pressure of unexpectedly becoming a parent to her orphaned 8-year-old niece Cady (McGraw). M3GAN is programmed to take care of the baby, but when she suddenly became her own “master user”, the artificial intelligence expanded its responsibilities and began to protect Cady at all costs, including killing anyone who might pose a threat to an 8-year-old child.
It’s safe to say that 2022 has been a great year for horror films with titles like Smile, Freshand Bodies Bodies Bodies, among other 2022 horror offerings that presented a different perspective on the genre. But 2023 appears to be no different, starting the year with M3GAN, which promises to be another horror hit. And this statement is not unfounded, given the experience of the film crew and cast in this genre. Wang is responsible for the terror behind spell, insidiousand Malignantand Blumhouse Productions brought Anabel and Guy to life. On the other hand, Williams, who is not only the film’s protagonist but also its executive producer, has starred in critically acclaimed horror films, including Get out and Perfection. So with the collaboration of horror professionals, we can already see M3GAN dancing its way to success.
M3GAN will be rated PG-13 for its violent and horrifying content. While this is disappointing for horror fans, there are some horror films that have done well even without the “Rated R” label, such as, happy death day films, both produced by Blumhouse.
Bloom stated in the short that the upcoming film will force everyone to turn off all their devices, which is reasonable considering the film uses technology to bring horror to the big screen. But it had to wait until M3GAN will be released in theaters on January 6, 2023. In the meantime, you can watch the short film below.
