As the year draws to a close James CameronThe epic sequel continues to spread around the world, according to Deadline. Avatar: Path of Water currently grossed over $1.1 billion at the worldwide box office on its 15th day of release, following an additional $70.5 million on Wednesday. Of the total, $762.8 million comes from international markets, allowing the film to become the biggest international release of the year.
Despite a lower-than-expected opening weekend of $134 million, the film continues to dominate the box office. Domestically, the film has so far earned $337.9 million, surpassing Thor: Love and Thunder$343 million. Can the movie win? Top Shooter: Maverick $718.7 million is yet to be seen. However, Avatar: Path of Water is currently behind the previously mentioned film by 1% and earned this week’s best Wednesday of the year grossing $20.4 million, topping Mavericks $14.8 million.
In international markets, the film continues to hold its own at the box office. As of Wednesday, the film has earned a total of $75 million in France alone, and $3.7 million in China on Thursday, despite ongoing COVID-related restrictions, adding $116 million to its total. In Korea, the epic sci-fi film also continues to see massive success from $2.1 million to its total of $62.7 million. Among other larger markets, the film grossed a total of $52.1 million in Germany and $42.4 million in India.
With a third installment already filmed and several other sequels already in development, much of the franchise’s future hinged on success. Avatar: Path of Water. However, given that the film has already crossed the billion-dollar milestone and is holding steady at the box office, it looks like Cameron’s epic sci-fi universe has a great future ahead of it.
More than ten years after the events of the first film, Avatar: Path of Water sees the return Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldanhaand Stephen Lang like Jake Sully, Neytiri and Colonel Miles Quaritch. Sigourney Weaver also returns in the sequel as Kiri, a new character, and stars alongside several new actors such as Kate Winslet like Ronal, Cliff Curtis like Tonowari, and Edie Falco as General Francis Ardmore.
