There are many great shows on our TV screens this summer. Especially on Netflix, where the popular sci-fi series is back. very strange things as well as Umbrella Academy. However, one of the underrated new shows on the streamer was Resident Evil. Unfortunately, after just one season, the series based on the mega-popular video game franchise of the same name was canceled last Friday. Now a star Lance Reddick who played a version of the iconic character Albert Wesker spoke about the news.
In a video posted to Reddick’s Twitter page, the actor talked about filming the series, saying in part, “We worked hard and had a great time.” He went on to thank the crew, executive producers and actors such as Paola Nunez, Siena Agudong, Ella Balinska, Tamara Smartas well as Adeline Rudolph. He also thanked the fans for their love and support. However, in the same breath, Reddick also took the time to call out the “trolls and haters” that the series has dealt with throughout its short life. The series has had quite a bit of negative attention since its announcement, with many fans of the franchise not giving it a chance due to its different take on established lore. Many people on social media are even celebrating the show’s cancellation after the news broke. Reddick especially thanked the people who “understood what we were doing”, and repeated this several times, and for good reason, since this series was not at all like games.
This may sound like a negative, but it was actually Resident Evilthe biggest power. It was a rich and rather gripping family tragedy that explored Albert Wesker with unique meaning. The arrival of the Wesker children also added a new dynamic to this would-be villain. Because of that, in true franchise style, this sci-fi series has never taken a terrible hit. The history of the Weskers goes into very dark and emotionally disturbing places, especially in the last two episodes. Everything from action-infused horror to stellar effects filled with iconic monsters from the franchise served as a love letter to Resident Evil adding a beefy coat of fresh paint to the franchise. However, one of the main reasons this series worked was because of Reddick’s brilliant performance. The actor brought so much refreshing life to Wesker, perfectly balancing his impressive intensity, mannerisms and overly Shakespearean acting. This crazy mixture of tones is a mixture that Resident Evil has always thrived, and this series knew it.
Concerning, Resident Evil deserved a second chance at life. It was a misunderstood genre series that didn’t stand a chance in a crowded summer market full of returning franchises. Reddick’s message is a reminder that no matter what you think about the overall end product, there are real people behind all these intimidating blockbusters. The TV industry is brutal and many hardworking people rarely get the recognition they deserve. At the very least, fans of the series can take some comfort in the knowledge that everyone had a great time making it. In this short message, you can see Reddick’s love for the series and his character.
