Contrary to the prevailing narrative about what works and what doesn’t at the box office these days, All Everywhere All at once became the first film distributed by the independent company A24 to break the $100 million mark at the worldwide box office. Released in March, the film grossed $68.9 million in the US and a further $31.1 million internationally.

It’s a real hit for sleep at a time when most films rely heavily on opening weekends for the bulk of their earnings. A film about the racing of the multiverse appeared immediately after Spiderman: No Way Home, which had a budget ten times larger and grossed over $1.9 billion worldwide at the box office. Many compared the two films and praised All Everywhere All at once for how emotionally resonant it remained despite its genre footing.
Starring Michelle Yeoh in a role that’s already causing Oscar buzz, All Everywhere All at once is a wild mixture of martial arts films and the director’s dizzying novels Wong Kar-wai. It combines comic book narrative with science fiction and fantasy, but at the very heart of its hearts is a deeply moving story about a mother and her daughter, and a generational gap that threatens to tear them apart.
The film was also praised for its representation of minority communities, for Son Lux’s music, and for reintroducing audiences to Ke Hai Quanbest known for playing the Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom almost four decades ago. own collider Ross Bonime called it “one of the most ambitious and crazy films of recent memory” in his enthusiastic review.
