Editor’s Note: Below are spoilers for the Gray Man. gray man, available to stream on Netflix since July 22, is the platform’s most expensive film to date, with a reported budget of $200 million. Unfortunately, all that money didn’t help make the story particularly compelling, as it’s also a little messy and not in a good way. While good action movies often rely on a straightforward premise to keep the spectacle focused, this is a film that loops on itself in unnecessarily convoluted ways and becomes a tedious job. Even though battle after battle spans many continents and locations, it relies on many tedious plots to get us there. By the time we arrive, most of the tension will be gone and the fights will play out without any additional investment.
This creates an experience that is inundated with so many spy clichés that it uses to try and evoke some sort of thrill, though it only threatens to drown out the whole story. However, given that more sequels based on the film’s conclusion may be on the horizon, the twisty story itself could end up being quite important. So, in case you haven’t figured it out yet, this part will cover every detail of the movie’s ending right up to the very last frame. If you haven’t seen it and don’t want to be spoiled, bookmark it and then come back later. If you are reading this in the future, when will we receive Gray man 2: Gray is strongerthen it will fill you with information about what happened that you probably already forgot.
Based on the popular novel of the same name Mark Greaney, the film follows two opposing spies. One is known only as Six (Ryan Gosling) and for the past 25 years he has been a so-called Sierra agent. He joined them under duress after being given a leave of absence from prison in exchange for working for them. In an early fight scene, we see that Six has to strike at a person who is engaged in some kind of information exchange. He’s there with his partner DaniAna De Armas) who helps him when things go awry. Deciding not to fire the initial shot he was ordered to fire, Six ends up knocking his target down in the shadow of an exploding firework. With his dying breath, the man he was sent to kill informs him that he was also a Sierra agent known as Four. He gives him information about a flash drive hidden in a coin on his necklace and warns him to trust the corrupt Danny Carmichael (Rare Jean Page). Dani then comes over to ask him what happened and he tells her that the target was a member of Sierra, which she said was not the information they were given. Six then leaves, leaving Dani to clean up with the other agents while he tries to piece together what happened.
Six keeps it all to herself as Carmichael interrogates him, effectively spiraling out of control. He then goes to a sort of Internet cafe, where he discovers that the disc contains information about illegal CIA deals that Carmichael is running. However, it is encrypted and he cannot access it. He sends information to his retired mentor Donald Fitzroy (Billy Bob Thornton) and ran. He then sends it to Maurice Cahill (Alfre Woodard), who is also retired and dying of cancer. Six involving both of them lead to the kidnapping of Fitzroy’s niece Claire (Julia Butters). Through flashbacks, we learn that Claire is one of the few people that Six considers family. We are introduced to the film’s antagonist Lloyd (Chris Evans), a mustachioed maniac known for his penchant for killing everyone in his path. Lloyd uses Claire as leverage to get Fitzroy to drop Six. When he is attacked on the plane, he manages to jump out as it crashes and wrests the parachute from the man who tried to kill him. He then falls into the trap of a document forger he thought he could trust, gets into a fight with Lloyd and is rescued by Dani. He still doesn’t trust her, as he thinks she might be corrupt too. She places him in the back seat of a departing car to put more distance between them and an already very enraged Lloyd, whom she fired a tranquilizer gun at. The duo then eventually attempt to team up with Cahill, only to be attacked again. In the chaos, Cahill sacrifices himself by blowing up his house to give them cover to escape again.
Lloyd, hidden with his hostages and watching the action on the video monitors, begins to unravel. Eventually, Dany and Six figure out where he is in the climactic final episode. More fights ensue, and the duo eventually end up in the building. Fitzroy also sacrifices himself after Six runs off with Claire. Lloyd and Six get into a fight in a fountain, ending with the former dead. All the blame is placed on Lloyd while Carmichael is free to continue doing whatever he wants while Claire is sent to a secret location due to a deal Dani makes to protect her. The sixth is sent to prison, but escapes almost immediately. He then sets out to track down where Claire has been taken. He manages to save her from various thugs guarding the place while she listens to music in her room. He opens the door to let her know it’s all right, makes a witticism, and they embrace. They then race the car, heading into the distance, where new potential adventurers are waiting for them. Simply put, this story doesn’t solve anything. Instead, it just stops and basically all the same threats remain, with the exception of the now-deceased Lloyd being made a fallen guy as he leaves the door open for more sequels. This marks the tentative end of a story that has been a hodgepodge of MacGuffins, ending not so much in an explosion as in a whimper.
