Corpus Christi is a public holiday. This means that most shops will be closed on this day. Let’s check where the trade ban does not apply.
- Why does Corpus Christi fall on June 8th?
- What stores will be open on Corpus Christi?
- When is the trade ban still in effect?
Corpus Christi in 2023 falls on June 8th. This is one of the most important church holidays and one of the statutory holidays. For this reason, most businesses will be closed. However, there are some exceptions that may be open these days. Their list is given in the Law on Restriction of Trade on Sundays and Holidays.
Why does Corpus Christi fall on June 8th?
The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, also known as Corpus Christi, is a moving feast. Its date is strictly dependent on the date of the celebration of Easter. It always takes place 60 days after this feast and 11 days after Pentecost. For this reason, we invariably celebrate the Body of Christ on Thursday. In 2023, its date falls on June 8th.
What stores will be open on Corpus Christi?
Exceptions to the trade ban are listed in the 2018 Act. Based on the contents of this recipe, we know the following will be unlocked on Corpus Christi:
-
gas stations
-
shops operating at the station or at the airport;
-
animal hospitals;
-
pharmacies;
-
restaurants and bars;
-
cinemas;
-
confectionery and bakeries;
-
clubs;
-
ice cream shops;
-
Post offices.
Smaller local shops will also operate if they meet certain conditions. On this day, the owner or one of his closest relatives should stand behind the counter. The same rule applies to franchised stores. Therefore, some Żabka and Carrefour Express stores will remain open.
When is the trade ban still in effect?
During the year we celebrate several holidays that are official days off. One of them is Christmas. However, there are five more such holidays before the end of the year. They are:
-
Day of the Polish Army - August 15;
-
All Saints - November 1;
-
National Independence Day - November 11;
-
Christmas - December 25;
-
Boxing Day - December 26th.
The trading ban also applies to most Sundays, including June 11th. However, on June 9 and 10 we will shop without any problems. On these days, all shops will be open as on any other day of the week.
