Spanish scientists from the University of Alicante have made an intriguing discovery using new technology to study the ancient past. Thanks to specially trained drones, they explored previously inaccessible areas and discovered the forgotten art of ancient people.
Drones have discovered cave paintings - these are paintings of the Neolithic era
Archaeologists have used advanced drones in their latest search for the remains of our ancestors. The new expedition focused on the gorge of Castelle Barranc del Sol and the vicinity of Port de Penagila. They are located in the Valencian commune of Penagila.
The devices were skillfully equipped with good quality cameras. With their help, 18 hard-to-reach and fairly shallow depressions in rock formations were explored. Two of the previously selected positions were in the bull’s-eye. The researchers found clear traces of the presence of proto-humans there, including cave paintings that are at least 7,000 years old.
The paintings found in the Gorge del Sol are quite interesting. They seem to depict a group of archers surrounded by deer and goats. You can guess that it was game, not domesticated. Some of the creatures were depicted with arrows stuck in their bodies. The meaning of other works discovered so far remains a mystery, as they are very simplified and schematic.

Molina Hernandez, a well-known archaeologist and longtime drone pilot, is thrilled with the latest success. As he says, it was the use of drones that contributed to the whole find. Probably, without their use, archaeological sites would not have been discovered.
Discoveries matter a lot. These subhuman shelters are one of the most important sites documented to date in the entire region of Valencia. Besides, this is only the first step in a long project. So far, only the first clues have been found. However, over time, they may lead archaeologists to a wider discovery of the remains of even the entire community of our ancestors who lived in the area of the first find.
