Poles give animals to shelters. They don’t have money to support them

Must read

Due to the rising costs of keeping and veterinary treatment, more and more animals end up in shelters. “Fewer and fewer people can afford to keep a cat or dog and provide them with veterinary care in case of illness,” Joanna Repel, a spokeswoman for the Krakow Animal Care Society, told PAP.

Galloping inflation is observed in almost all spheres of life, the growing costs have also affected the veterinary industry. The result is an increase in the number of animals given to shelters.

Crowded animal shelters.

Joanna Repel, a spokeswoman for the Krakow Animal Care Society, told PAP that 2022 was a record year for the number of animals donated to a shelter. This was superimposed by several factors, first of all, the return to life after quarantine. Many people who adopted a dog or cat during the pandemic had to give them away because they no longer had time to care for them. Refugees from Ukraine who could not take them with them also left the animals in shelters.

- But very often the reason for abandoning a quadruped was and remains the lack of money for its maintenance and treatment, - said Joanna Repel.

Veterinary services are getting more expensive

The Cracow Association Opieek nad Petami not only manages the shelter, but also co-finances veterinary treatment. According to the representative of the organization, almost half a million zlotys were spent for these purposes last year. Treatment, which before the pandemic cost several hundred zlotys, can now cost several thousand.

- Since the beginning of this year, we have already collected two folders of new applications for financing or co-financing the treatment of 142 animals. Therefore, we regret to inform you that until further notice, we will only accept requests for assistance in funding vital procedures and those relating to castration and sterilization, says Joanna Repel.
