Poles have a mobile phone more than a washing machine. The popularity of dishwashers is steadily growing. The Central Statistical Office checked, and the HRE Investments website described what equipment we have at home.

95 out of 100 apartments have a washing machine. We don’t know what happens to dirty clothes in 5% of households. households that do not have washing machines - most likely they “rent” linen to their parents or use public laundries. In big cities, more and more such places are being built, but, as can be seen from the data collected by the Central Statistical Office, Poles cannot imagine life without their own washing machine.

Poles have more washing machines than Swedes

This distinguishes us from the Scandinavians who do their laundry in the basements of their neighborhoods. As a rule, they do not leave room for “spontaneity”: you need to enter the calendar of using the washing machine in advance and follow your order, because there are many people who want to use the device.

It may seem odd that wealthy Swedes don’t own washing machines but instead agree to work on a laundry schedule. Here is how Natalia Kolachek, the author of a book about life in Sweden, writes about this phenomenon in the Szwecjoblog blog:

“First common laundry (wattstugalaundry) in apartment buildings was created in the 1920s, and the devices that were there made the collective laundry really more efficient and faster than what housewives at home could afford. In the 1950s, automatic washing machines were standard in every communal laundry. Laundromats in the basements of apartment buildings were primarily meant to make life easier, to be functional, and at the same time to create a sense of community in a time when many people traveled from small centers to large anonymous cities. Today (according to a 2012 report) 69% of the members of Hyresgästförening, the Swedish tenants’ union, use shared laundry in Sweden.”

This data was obtained several years ago, so the percentage of owners of washing machines has certainly increased.

Dishwasher in every second home

But back to Poland and the data on our possession of items. In 2021, only one person in 71 in Poland did not have a mobile phone. In 2003, less than half of Poles had a mobile phone in their pocket. The Poles also liked the idea that they don’t have to do the dishes because the machine does it for them. In 2003, only 3% of households had a dishwasher. farms. Today we can find it in almost every second kitchen.
