Lee Young Hee became the first female CEO of Samsung. The manager quickly rose through the ranks in a Korean corporation and finally became the first person to be promoted to such a high position.
On Monday, Samsung officially announced the appointment of Lee Yong Hee as President of the Global Marketing Center of the Samsung DX (Device eXperience) division of Samsung Electronics. Samsung DX handles the company’s smartphone business.
This is the first time that a female manager has served as CEO in a Korean company that is still dominated by male managers.
Samsung has its first female president
Lee Young Hee has a dynamic career. She joined Samsung in 2007, having previously worked at L’Oreal.
At the Korean conglomerate, Samsung Electronics was responsible for promoting and creating a recognizable image for the Samsung Galaxy smartphone brand. She was promoted to vice president in 2012, five years after starting work. However, it took her almost 10 years to rise to the level of president.
Samsung wants to change corporate culture
Samsung Electronic noted that Lee Yong Hee’s promotion to the position of president of one of the key corporate departments should provide an opportunity for other women working in the company. It was noted that dedication and career advancement would be noticed and rewarded regardless of the employee’s gender.
According to Sammobile, the appointment of Lee Yong-hee as president is the first major change in the company’s structure since executive chairman Lee Jae-yong came to power at Samsung. Interestingly, after the departure of Lee Jae Seung in October, Samsung Electronics lost its president/president due to personal reasons.
