Every year we throw away almost 5 million tons of food. This influence, including a misunderstanding of expiration dates

Must read

Every year 4.8 million tons of food is thrown away in Poland. This influence, including misinterpretation of the markings on the packaging. The campaign “Often good longer” has just been launched to educate Poles in this area.

On September 29, that is, next Thursday, we will celebrate the International Day of Awareness on Food Loss and Waste. The data in this regard is alarming. It turns out that 4.8 million tons of food is thrown away in Poland every year, which means that the average Kowalski throws out 153 kg of food during this time. Less than 88 million tons of food is wasted in the European Union, a result of misinterpretation of package labels.

What does the misinterpretation of the label on the package mean? Most of us do not pay attention to the difference between “use before” and “before eating.” This should be changed by the launched To Good To Go campaign “Often kinder is kinder”, to which retail chains have joined, undertaking to place special labels on their products. Labels with the words “Often good longer: look, smell, taste” can be found on the packages of more than 140 products.

What can you eat after childbirth?

- Etiquette prescribes - if the expiration date has passed, instead of throwing it away: look, smell, try! This is the only and effective way to keep expired products. We advise: today it is good to serve food saved from being eaten! Canned tomato puree soup after a deadline? Italian pasta on the package whose date has passed? Sounds just elegant! After all, sugar after the due date is also sweet, and you don’t have to be so conservative when it comes to the terms of minimum durability. - emphasizes To Good To Go.

Pasta and sugar are just some of the foods you can eat after the deadline. The situation is quite different with products with the inscription “must be eaten” on the packaging. These products must not be eaten after the specified date. This applies, for example, to cold cuts, meat or fish.

- If before the consumption of products after the deadline caused a number of doubts and was associated with stomach problems, now we are starting to notice that eating is “often good for longer.” We have already placed special pictograms “Often good longer: look, smell, taste” on more than 140 Polish favorite products, encouraging you to use your senses to evaluate whether the product is suitable for consumption. This is a revolution that many food manufacturers have joined. The goal is not to waste! - emphasizes Anna Kurnatowska, Regional Manager of Too Good To Go in Poland.

26 companies operating in Poland decided to change the label. This is incl. Danone, Winiary, Frosta, Auchan, Kaufland, Soligrano, Herbapol, Pan Tomidor or Wege Siostry.
