Electric buses are gaining popularity in the European Union, but diesel vehicles still dominate when it comes to registration.
Last year, diesel vehicles accounted for 67.3 percent. all sales of new buses in the European Union. At the same time, electrified vehicle registrations (excluding HEV hybrids) increased, bringing them to 12.7 percent at the end of last year. across the market, said the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA).
Diesel and petrol buses
Registration of new diesel buses in the EU fell by 7.8% last year. up to 18 500 pcs. However, diesel buses continued to be the most popular, accounting for 67.3% of all buses. the entire sale. Three of the region’s four major markets saw double-digit declines: Germany (-28.9%), France (-21.4%) and Italy (-21.4%). In Spain, new diesel bus registrations were higher (year-on-year) by 52.2 percent. At the same time, only three petrol buses were sold in the EU in 2022.

In 2022, sales of new electrified buses (of which ACEA includes electric vehicles, fuel cell vehicles, so-called long-range hybrid vehicles and plug-in hybrids) grew by 13.7%. up to 3505 units. This amounted to 12.7 percent. the entire bus market in the EU. France - the largest market for this type of fuel - recorded an increase of 26.4 percent. Germany and Denmark, the second and third largest markets, also showed strong growth (10.1% and 79.5% respectively).
Classic Hybrid Vehicles (HEV)
In contrast, sales of classic hybrid buses (HEVs) fell by 25.9% and their market share decreased from 10.3% to 10.3%. in 2021 to 8.1 percent. last year. This was mainly due to the sharp decline recorded in Germany (-25.3%), which accounts for almost half of the EU market of all EU-registered HEVs.
Alternative fuels
Only 11.9 percent. of all new city and intercity buses registered in 2022 were powered by alternative fuels, which ACEA includes vehicles powered by natural gas, LPG, biofuels and ethanol. Most buses in the “alternative fuel” category ran on natural gas. France, the largest market in the EU, suffered losses (-11.5%), but Italy and Spain recorded triple- and double-digit growth (+112.6% and +28.6%). This resulted in an overall increase of 8.0%, with 3262 units registered in the EU.
