Just add coffee grounds: how to get record harvests of raspberries

Must read

Raspberries are one of the most popular crops in the garden. It is relatively easy to care for and will give a high yield, provided that important details such as top dressing are taken into account. Instead of harmful chemical fertilizers, simple home remedies can be used, writes selbstversorger.de.

Usually raspberries are fertilized twice a year during the growing season. The first top dressing is done in the spring to provide it with enough nutrients from the very beginning of the growing season. This ensures healthy, vigorous growth and abundant flowering and fruiting. The second dressing is done after harvest. This is important in order to strengthen the plant for the upcoming winter and prepare it optimally for the next season.

Tip: Raspberries should never be fertilized shortly before harvest, as this affects fruit quality. Therefore, summer raspberries do not need to be fertilized in July, and in autumn - in August.

Numerous practical tests have proven that coffee grounds are a particularly good natural fertilizer. Instead of being thrown away with the garbage, it performs valuable functions in the soil when used correctly. It contains nutrients: potassium, phosphorus, calcium and nitrogen. In addition, coffee grounds are high in antioxidants and have an acidic pH, ideal for optimizing soil conditions. Coffee grounds from regular filter coffee are best suited, as they contain the highest content of important components. After making coffee, let the coffee grounds cool and dry. Never use wet or damp coffee grounds or they will stick together instead of spread and compact the soil.

If you like to barbecue, you can collect a lot of wood ash throughout the year. But owners of fireplaces and stoves should no longer throw away the remains of burnt wood, because they are an excellent source of nutrients for raspberries. The nutrients contained in wood ash have a positive effect on raspberries, as they are especially high in phosphorus, potassium, magnesium and calcium. It is important that the ash consists of wood that has not been glazed, varnished or impregnated.

Green tea is rich in iron. For top dressing twice a year, use tea leaves. Tea leaves contain more nutrients and are therefore more suitable for raspberries. After brewing, tea leaves or a tea bag are dried and applied to the ground.
