The administration of US President Joe Biden is considering the possibility of significantly expanding the training of the Ukrainian military at the American base in Germany. The idea is to train up to 2500 people per month. It is reported by CNN. If the proposal is passed, it would mean a significant increase not only in the number of Ukrainians trained by the US, but also in the type of training they receive.
Under the new program, larger groups of Ukrainian military personnel will be involved in the training, who will practice more complex tactical methods of warfare, including the coordination of infantry and artillery maneuvers. The fighters will receive much more intensive and comprehensive training than what Ukraine received in Poland or the UK.
CNN recalls that since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, the United States has taught only a few thousand Ukrainian soldiers, mostly in small groups, specific weapons systems.
“We will not be ahead of decisions that have not yet been made, but we are constantly looking for ways to provide Ukrainians with the necessary skills. They must succeed on the battlefield while Ukraine defends its territory from Russian aggression,” – quotes CNN an anonymous source in the US administration.
How decisive a so-called “combined exercise” on the battlefield will be remains an open question, as the war is largely fought as a war of attrition between two artillery armies, said Mike Kofman, an expert on Russian and Ukrainian militaries at the Center for Naval Analysis.
“It’s a good idea because Ukraine needs all the training they can get, - he said. - But the main variable on the battlefield right now is the availability of ammunition on both sides. The Ukrainians will not be as effective in combined arms maneuvers if they do not have enough artillery ammunition.”
Earlier, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that the best way to ensure lasting peace in Ukraine is to provide it with weapons. At the same time, the US military is talking about the urgent need to transfer MiG and F-16 aircraft to Ukraine.
