Supermarket chain Walmart and Google subsidiary Wing announce the imminent launch of a drone-delivery shopping service. Soon the cars will deliver packages to more than 60,000 homes around one of the major US cities.
Drone delivery could be the future of online shopping and even fundamentally change the entire logistics industry. Two well-known companies are experimenting with sky-high deliveries right now and are announcing a groundbreaking project.
Walmart and Wing will deliver purchases using drones
Popular in the US supermarket chain Walmart needs no introduction even in Poland. In a new initiative, the food giant has joined forces with Wing, a company owned by Alphabet Holding, a family of companies that includes Google, among others.
As part of the announced project, Walmart will use Wing drones to automatically deliver packages by air. The service is expected to begin “in just a few weeks” and is currently expected to reach approximately 60,000 homes in the Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) metropolitan area of Texas.
The first shipments will be delivered to users’ homes from a Walmart supermarket in Frisco. The second distribution center with drones should be launched before the end of 2023.
How does drone delivery work? Walmart translates
According to official information, deliveries will be made to points located approximately 6 miles (less than 10 kilometers) from the respective sales center. Drone delivery includes select products such as ready-to-eat lunch boxes, staples, and even over-the-counter medications. Interestingly, the company is not afraid of even such delicate products as eggs or dessert ice cream.
The main idea behind the combined Walmart and Google service is to save time, since a large number of residents have to make special trips to a larger store by car (and potentially get stuck in traffic). Drones will deliver groceries that we have just run out of quickly and practically to the door of the house.
The drones fly at about 65 miles per hour (or nearly 105 km/h), and the company promises every order will be delivered to a customer in 30 minutes or less. Everything is accelerated by the fact that drones do not need to land to pick up an order or transfer purchases to a customer. Everything is done with the help of an ingenious system of retractable cords.
