Magda Linette started the WTA 500 tournament in Charleston very well. The Poznan native beat Petra Martic 2-0 in the first round and appears to be returning to good form after a series of poor matches. Now her compatriot Magdalena French has taken to the clay courts.
WTA Charleston: First set to forget
The player from Lodz will face Sloane Stephens in the second round of the WTA 500 in Charleston. These tennis players have faced each other twice so far, with the American coming out on top each time. We hoped that the second racket of Poland would finally lift the “curse” of her opponent.
This was not evident from the very beginning, because Magdalena Frech lost in the first game. Stevens returned well, which caused problems for our representative. Fortunately, the Pole was not discouraged by this turn of events and almost immediately began to make up for her losses. Already in the second part of this set, the player from Lodz had the opportunity to break her opponent, but the opponent successfully defended and took the lead 0:2.
Unfortunately, after fourteen minutes of play, Sloane Stephens was already leading 0:3. It seemed that the Polish woman’s serve did not make any impression on the American, and she responded with full force. Moreover, there were many mistakes in Frech’s game, which only made the task easier for her opponent. As a result, the first set ended with a score of 0:6, which did not inspire optimism in the second set.

Unfortunately, Magdalena Frech did not forget what happened in the first set and did not defend her serve at the very beginning. Fortunately, in the next part the Polish woman pulled herself together and broke the American again. This gave her wind in her sails because already in the third game she was more aggressive. As a result, Stephens once again managed to win a break point on the serve of the Lodzin football player, thanks to which she again took the lead.
Sloane Stephens finished things off in the second set and won with a score of 2:6, and 0:2 for the whole match. The American’s opponent in the second round of WTA Charleston will be Leila Fernandez from Canada.
