Former tennis player Jelena Dokic decided to make a very bold confession. In an extensive Instagram post, she talked about a nightmare that her father gave her in her youth. The Australian was beaten and harassed, leading her to attempt suicide years later.
Elena Dokich survived a real hell that lasted for several years. Her father Damir Dokic nearly ruined her career. She was regularly harassed and insulted by him.
Elena Dokich tried to commit suicide
About a decade ago, Jelena Dokic ranked fourth in the WTA world rankings. The tennis player decided on a very bold confession, indicating that she almost did not commit suicide because of her father. “Swollen, bruised and bleeding shins after being beaten and kicked with sharp boots all night,” Jelena Dokic wrote under a photo of one of her shots from the match. “I still had severe bruising,” she added.
“The beatings have left me with sensitive and bumpy shins so far. Every wound leaves a scar and this is mine. I almost jumped off the balcony on the 26th floor. I wanted to kill myself. I survived, but not every woman and girl survived or will survive. I am sad and angry at the millions of women in the world who are now experiencing much worse than me. In Australia alone, one woman dies a week as a result of domestic violence, and one in four women have experienced domestic violence in their lifetime. Globally, the numbers are even worse. This is a sad reality,” she continued in her post.

In an interview with CNN, Jelena Dokic said that many assumed that if her relationship with her father was close to normal, then she would have a chance to win a Grand Slam tournament and become the leader of the world rankings. Such thoughts return to her when she looks at the players who receive support from their loved ones. In an Instagram post, she urged not to underestimate the violence experienced by women.
“The more we move away from this topic, the more we reject women and girls. Please don’t turn your back. They need you and your help too. Talking about domestic violence does not require attention. We live in a society that shames and stigmatizes talk of abuse and domestic violence and then mourns the killings it causes. Let’s do more for future generations,” she concluded.
