Polish volleyball player Bartosz Buchko, who plays in Turkey, reported on the situation from the Hatay region, where an earthquake struck on Monday. The player, his wife and young son had to be evacuated from the danger zone.
Bartos Buchko has been representing Turkish Hatayaspor since the beginning of the current season. The club from the Hatay region is based in Antioch, one of the places where the earthquake caused gigantic destruction. Buchko was returning with the team from an away match when he learned that an earthquake had occurred in the region where he lived. His first fears concerned the fate of his wife and son sleeping in Antioch.
“We played away, returned by bus. My friends woke me up around 3 am. They say, “Call your family because there was an earthquake in Hatay.” The wife answered the call a second time when she was outside with our ten month old son. Then the air came out of me,” Buchko told Polsat Sport.

The 28-year-old man added that he could not imagine that the city would be destroyed. When he drove in, he realized that everything had gone wrong, and the elements had caused enormous damage.
“When I was driving, I imagined what it might look like. I thought the buildings didn’t collapse. The closer we got to this place, I realized that it was not colorful. When we entered Antioch, I was terrified. All other houses were destroyed, the streets were impassable, the main hospital at the very entrance to the city was greatly shaken. Nightmarish scenes, like from a disaster movie, he described.

Turkey and Syria were hit by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake and numerous aftershocks. In total, according to official figures, more than 5,000 people died. The United Nations estimates that more than twenty million people may need assistance.
