The seven-year-old from Gates Mills, Ohio, who once ranked No. 27 in the world, never made it to the fourth round of a Grand Slam competition, but made her first appearance at the US Open in the third round. It was the first confrontation between both players. - I don’t know much about her. We played together in training, but it was in 2019, so, naturally, I need to update my knowledge about this, - the polka admitted.
US Open. Iga Swiatek won the first set
For Iga Sviontek, this was the first evening session at the US Open this year. The early ones started in the morning. The famous musician Seal went to the Polish match, although at the same time there was a match between Rafael Nadal and Richard Gasquet. He couldn’t complain about the lack of emotion.
The host player, ranked 105th in the world rankings, fought courageously in the first set. Already in the opening game, she had a chance for a break, which she did not take advantage of. The Polka won three games in a row, and it seemed that the first set would soon be over.
Nothing out of this. The American was not going to give up. She struggled to such an extent that after the seventh game she had to ask for a break due to illness. In turn, Iga, after an excellent start, began to make an unprecedented number of unforced errors. Sviontek kept the advantage in the breakthrough. She won the first set, which lasted almost an hour!
Lauren Davis scared Iga Swiatek
The tireless American started the second game brilliantly. Swiatek had big problems with the game, especially on the left. The game of the Pole fell apart. Davis won three games in a row and had a chance to make a second break in the fourth. The 21-year-old struggled to play nervously but managed to defend her bid.
Davis, after a perfect start, began to make mistakes. Swiatek had a great chance to catch up. In the fifth installment she led 40:15! The American brought balance, and then won decisive points. At this stage of the match, the Pole had as many as 35 unforced errors!
In the decisive phase of the second set, Davis lost her strength, decided to lower the bar, which Sviontek diligently took advantage of - she won three games in a row, bringing it to a 4:4 state. The American could no longer threaten Swiatek, who, like a year ago, reached the 1/8 finals of the US Open. The match lasted one hour and 59 minutes!
- I couldn’t find my own rhythm today. Rivalka played very good tennis, not at all the same as my previous rivals, she said after the meeting.
