Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi resigns. He handed the corresponding statement to the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella.

This was reported by the press service of the President of Italy.

“Italian President Sergio Mattarella today received Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, who, after reporting on yesterday’s discussion and vote in the Senate, reiterated his resignation. The President of the Republic took this into account. The government remains in power to carry out current duties,” the statement said.

It should be noted that Draghi first delivered a speech to parliament, in which he spoke about his intention to resign.

“Sometimes even the hearts of central banks are used. In light of the vote expressed last night by the Senate of the Republic, I ask that the meeting be adjourned as I go to the President of the Republic to announce my decisions,” he said.

A preliminary vote in the Italian Senate showed that Draghi had lost the support of the three coalition parties. At the same time, he still received a majority of votes “for” - 95 senators spoke out in support of the head of government.

Earlier, Draghi announced that he was resigning as Prime Minister of Italy. He said that he took such a step due to the fact that there was a split in the coalition. The politician noted that the national majority, which supported the government from the very beginning, no longer exists.
