The doctor who fought for the life of 8-year-old Kamil for “Wprost”: We have several such cases a year

How can you suspect that a child is being abused? – There are injuries that could not be caused by chance; burns such as “socks”, “gloves”: the effect of immersing the legs or hands in hot water. Burns of the buttocks and perineum after immersion in boiling water (this is a punishment for bedwetting). It is important to respond when there is a suspicion that a child may be a victim of violence, says Dr. Andrzej Bulandra, coordinator of the Children’s Trauma Center of the Upper Silesian Child Health Center.

Katarzyna Pinkosz, Vprost: You and the entire team of the Upper Silesian Children’s Health Center have been trying to save the life of 8-year-old Kamil for more than a month. For more than a month there was hope that, despite all the injuries of the boy, he would be saved.

Andrzej Bulandra, MD: We fought as a team - doctors, nurses and other members of the intensive care unit, the hospital burn team, the operating room and other departments of our hospital. Failed. What do I feel, what do we feel? Sadness.

What is the immediate cause of the boy’s death?

Multiple organ failure that developed as a result of a burn disease in a boy who was a neglected child, which made the disease more severe. A whole range of circumstances contributed to the fact that our actions were ineffective. Another decisive factor was the delay in starting treatment, due to the fact that the caregivers wanted to hide this fact.

We used the entire arsenal of available means, unfortunately, the body was too weak to overcome the burn disease and generalized infection resulting from wound infection.

There is a lot of talk about Camille. But it’s not the only child you’ve taken care of that was beaten and abused by caregivers.

We take in several of these children every year, and this number is certainly an underestimate. We are not always able to recognize child abuse, although we are very sensitive to it. The injury may seem random, the story told by the parent may seem authentic. And the child often will not say otherwise. A large number of beaten children do not go to the hospital because their parents hide the violence within their four walls, fearing the consequences.
