Do not paint your nails before visiting a dermatologist. It could save your life

Must read

If you have an appointment with a dermatologist, don’t forget to paint your nails. Why is it important? The nails show signs of a dangerous disease.

The question of proper preparation for a visit to the doctor was raised on social networks by dermatologist Agnieszka Kobylka-Dziki, who maintains the popular @mama_dermatolog profile. The doctor explains why there should be no varnish on the nails (also hybrid or gel).

Why not paint your nails before a visit to a dermatologist?

As Agnieszka Kobylka-Dziki emphasizes, the color or condition of the nail plate can tell a lot about the health of the patient, as well as the imperfections or skin problems with which you come to visit (for example, psoriasis symptoms are visible on the nails). - A very aggressive melanoma can also form on the nail plate. Staining that does not cause you suspicion, the doctor will notice in time, and this will save your life, - the doctor explains.

What does melanoma look like on a nail?

Symptoms of nail melanoma for an experienced dermatologist are quite specific, but patients often confuse them with harmless changes that appear on the skin and nails. One of the most characteristic symptoms of nail melanoma is the appearance of a vertical, less often horizontal, scar or stripe of brown, black, or bluish color. Nail melanoma is also indicated by brown, black, or blue spots of various shapes that have jagged edges and do not disappear as the nail grows. These changes are often mistaken by patients for symptoms associated with trauma or symptoms of mycosis. Therefore, each disturbing change on the nail plate should be consulted with a specialist.
