The personality of the parents and the future of the child. Check if they are related

Must read

Parents usually do everything in their power to provide their children with a beautiful and happy life. Can the personalities of the guardians influence the fate of the young man?

Professor Joshua Jackson of Washington University in St. Louis decided to find out if the personalities of parents can influence the lives of children. Read what he found out.

Characteristics of parents and the future of the child

The study involved 9,400 adolescents aged 11 to 17 years, along with their parents. Personality traits related to the so-called “big five” were analyzed. We include:

  • friendliness characterizes people who willingly cooperate with others and act for the common good,
  • openness - associated with cognitive curiosity, creativity and readiness for new experiences,
  • scrupulousness - describes people who are persistent and determined, purposeful,
  • extraversion - this trait refers to sociable and energetic people who show their emotions and thoughts outside,
  • neuroticism - concerns anxiety, nervousness and emotional instability.

Various aspects of young people’s lives were also considered, such as:

  • general health,

  • marks received at school,

  • frequent quarrels in the family,

  • the amount of time spent on recreational activities (activities other than surfing the Internet or watching TV),

  • addictions (smoking or drinking).

It turned out that the personality of caregivers has a significant impact on the life of a young person. Children of neurotics usually perform worse at school, spend less time in recreational activities and have health problems. Children of conscientious, open, extroverted, and pleasant parents are more successful in life.

Where do these dependencies come from? It is difficult to give an unambiguous answer to the question posed. It is not known how certain parental traits affect adolescents. One can only assume that the method of raising offspring is of great importance in this case. Interestingly, contrary to popular belief, children do not look as much like their parents as they age. Moreover, they can be their complete opposite.

Can parents change their personality to help their children more?

Personality is something constant and unchanging, but our habits and behavior are subject to change. If we become aware of who we are, we can shape our actions and learn certain ways of responding to certain situations. Nobody is doomed to success or failure.
