In Podlasie as in Bavaria. prof. Bossovsky: Let’s not wait until complications develop and acidosis occurs

Must read

– I would like to explore all the children in Poland. If we detect diabetes mellitus at a very early stage, we can delay the onset of the disease, protect the child from ketoacidosis, and in the future from chronic complications, says prof. Artur Bossovski, specialist in pediatrics, endocrinology, diabetology, as well as pediatric endocrinology and diabetology.

Katarzyna Pinkosz, Wprost: Children, even infants, often have type 1 diabetes. It is alarming that Poland is a country with a rapidly increasing number of children with type 1 diabetes. Until now, it was believed that nothing could be done to prevent this disease. So why are you testing children in Podlasie between the ages of 1 and 9 to see if they develop this disease?

prof. Arthur Bosovsky: We have a dramatic increase in the incidence of type 1 diabetes in children - not only in Poland, but throughout Europe, as well as in the United States, South America and Australia. Most cases are in Scandinavia (mainly Finland and Norway) and Sardinia in Italy. Dynamics is very growing.

Where did this increase come from? Type 1 diabetes is not affected by poor diet or lack of exercise…

It is difficult to answer this question unambiguously.
