– We have compensatory epidemics, which are the result of strict quarantine. Quarantine is necessary, but not as severe as it is today in China. However, our situation is very similar. This is the last call for vaccination, says Dr. Michal Sutkowski, President of Warsaw Family Medicine.
Katarzyna Pinkos, “Wprost”: It is impossible to get to the doctor, polyclinics are overcrowded, children’s departments are overcrowded. How many people do you see every day?
Dr. Michal Sutkowski: A few dozens. Many people get sick. I have been a doctor for many years and have never seen such an infectious season. Many children suffer from the disease - which is also surprising, because usually in the clinics of family doctors the proportions were such that adults predominated among the patients. Today there are a lot of diseases, especially in children.
Why is this season so unique in terms of the number of cases? Is this a consequence of the lockdown and fewer cases of illness other than COVID-19 in the last two years?
This is a compensatory epidemic, due to the fact that when we self-isolated and wore masks, there were fewer cases of all infectious diseases. These are the consequences of a strict regime of self-isolation. Quarantine is needed during an epidemic, but not so tough. This can be seen today in the example of China. The policy of “zero tolerance for COVID-19” means that there will now be a lot of sick people there, especially since a relatively small percentage of people there are vaccinated.
The situation in China today can be compared to the situation we are in: we have a relatively small number of people vaccinated against COVID-19, especially in the elderly population, and this vaccine is primarily important for them. Few have been vaccinated against influenza: today there are about 650,000 of them. people. Dramatically little.
