Vomiting in a child: the doctor told what to do and what drugs should not be given

Must read

The child suddenly began to vomit. Parents may panic: what can it be and how to help? Gave advice pediatrician Lidia Babich:

- Regurgitation does not violate the general condition of the child. Even if it happens often. Abundant regurgitation in a calm child, even a “fountain”, is still not vomiting. Regular vomiting after eating, in large volumes, the child does not gain or even lose weight - then go to the doctor so as not to miss pylorospasm.

Vomiting accompanied by diarrhea is most often an intestinal infection. Fortunately, most of them are caused by viruses and need only symptomatic treatment. Everything can start with vomiting. Diarrhea joins within 24 hours.

Causes of vomiting without diarrhea: non-diabetic ketoacidosis (acetonemic syndrome), chemical poisoning, heat stroke, dehydration, significant head trauma, food intolerance, surgical pathology. In this case, there will still be fever, impaired consciousness, neurological symptoms. If you do not understand the condition of the child, provide emergency care and consult a doctor in person.

- How to help a child at home?

-Start by restoring lost fluids and electrolytes. It is advisable to drink the child not only with water. Better - electrolyte solutions. Calculation - 10-20 ml per kg of body weight after each vomiting. The child will drink this volume 30-60 minutes after vomiting. Do not start drinking immediately, wait 10 minutes. Signs of dehydration: urination less than once every 3 hours, no urination for 6 hours or more, urine concentrated, rich yellow; dry lips, dry tongue, eyes that are not shiny, dry, “flabby” skin, crying without tears, weakness, drowsiness. These signs indicate that the child needs to drink more. Even if it will be necessary to wake the child, wake up and drink. If necessary, give antipyretics. If the baby is over 6 months old, breast milk alone may not be enough. Watch carefully for signs of dehydration. Unfortunately, in a nursing mother, milk production cannot suddenly increase by 1.5-2 times. Fluid loss in a child during vomiting increases instantly. Therefore, drink.

If the child already feels better and vomiting has stopped, it is not necessary to measure the ketone bodies in the urine with test strips.

Should not be given when vomiting: homeopathy, betargin, gepargin (have no proven effectiveness); probiotics (not an ambulance); activated charcoal in tablets (it is difficult for children to swallow tablets even in crushed form. As a sorbent - a weak effect); alcohol tinctures of walnut leaves, St. John’s wort, etc.; no-shpa (bitter, not stopping vomiting); nifuroxazide (does not work on viruses, bacterial intestinal infection still does not work. Safety in children has not been proven. Throw it away and forget it).
