In the US state of Florida, a loud scandal erupted. In one of the local schools, the parents accused the director of showing pornography in the classroom. The Tallahassee Classical school board has given Principal Hope Karrasakia a choice - either she leaves of her own free will, or she will be fired involuntarily.
It turned out that Karrasakia, who had worked as principal for about a year, showed the sixth-graders in the art history class photographs of the statue of David, as well as the paintings The Creation of Adam and The Birth of Venus. All three masterpieces belong to the Renaissance. There are naked bodies.
This is what angered the parents. They did not care at all that the statue of David is rightfully considered a masterpiece. It was created in the period 1501-1504 by Michelangelo. He also painted the painting “The Creation of Adam” (this is a fragment of the painting of the famous Sistine Chapel). Botticelli is the author of The Birth of Venus.
Answering questions from reporters, the head of the school board, Barney Bishop, said that the previous principal sent messages to parents that Michelangelo’s work would be discussed in the lesson, but this year Karrasakia did not.
Bishop called it a glaring mistake. He noted that parents have a right to know when their child is being taught a controversial topic or shown ambiguous images.
“We’re not going to show the full statue of David to the kindergartners. We’re not going to show it to second graders. Showing a statue of David is quite appropriate, starting from a certain age. And we intend now to clarify in which one,” Bishop said.
The case reached Florida Governor Ron De Santis. He is a well-known representative of the US Republican Party and is likely to run for president. De Santis ordered an expansion of a state law banning sex education and discussion of gender identity in high school. Teachers who violate the law face dismissal until their teaching license is revoked.
Earlier, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences introduced racial and gender rules for selecting films for the Oscars.
