In southern Italy, a large-scale search and rescue operation on land and sea is being completed. It had to be organized after the wreck of the ship, on board of which there were more than 100 illegal immigrants. No one can name their exact number yet. Italian authorities said 58 people had died, including a baby.
The shipwreck occurred near the seaside resort of Steccato di Cutro on the east coast of Calabria. When trying to land on the shore in a storm, the ship broke into two parts. At first, 28 corpses were thrown onto the beach.
Some of the illegal immigrants were able to swim to the shore. There they were picked up by rescuers.
An Italian Coast Guard spokesman told reporters that 80 people had been rescued as of the morning of February 26. They have received the necessary medical care.
Firefighters and other emergency services continued to search for survivors using jet skis, but bad weather complicated the operation.
Italian media reported that there were people from Iran, Afghanistan, Somalia and Pakistan on the ship.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgio Maloney expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy. She stressed that human traffickers are responsible for the deaths of illegal immigrants.
“It is inhuman to exchange the lives of men, women and children for the money they pay for tickets. They are promised a safe journey, and these unfortunates trade the last for a false prospect.‘ Maloney said.
Italy remains one of the main landing points for illegal immigrants trying to get to Europe by sea. In search of a better life, migrants try to cross the Mediterranean, trusting their lives to traffickers and smugglers from North Africa.
They forget that the so-called central Mediterranean route from Africa to Italy is considered one of the most dangerous in the world. More than 20,000 people have died or gone missing on this route since 2014, according to the International Organization for Migration.
Recall that 46 illegal immigrants were found dead in a truck in the United States.
