The Russian army is using the same tactics in Ukraine as the Islamic State terrorists in Syria and Iraq. This was announced by the representative of the US State Department Michael Tirre during a press conference of the US Congress Committee, known as the Helsinki Commission, where the issues of mining large areas of Ukrainian territory and terror against the civilian population were discussed, Voice of America reports.
“We know from Ukrainian officials that Russian soldiers are deliberately robbing civilian homes and bypassing large areas. This is reminiscent of the tactics of members of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, where terrorists tried to kill as many civilians as possible so that people were afraid to return to their homes. Tire said. - Demining large areas of Ukraine is “the biggest challenge since the Second World War.” So far, there are not enough demining teams in Ukraine, so the US plans to increase training assistance and provide additional equipment.”
The US State Department has allocated $91.5 million for demining. The funds will be used for training, providing equipment, as well as for the work of the teams, the Helsinki Commission said in a statement. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also spoke of Russia’s “mine terror” in his speech. According to him, this “more cruel and vile than missile terror, because there is no anti-mine system that can destroy at least part of the missiles, as is the case with air defense”. The mined area is more than 170 thousand square kilometers.
