The Finnish authorities have seized the assets of Russian billionaire brothers Boris and Arkady Rotenberg, members of the inner circle of Russian President Vladimir Putin. In addition, the assets of the Yandex company, one of the founders of which, Arkady Volozh, fell under EU sanctions, were arrested.
This was reported by the Commander-in-Chief with reference to the Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat.
According to the publication, the decision to seize the assets of businessmen under EU sanctions was made in August or early September.
The restrictions affected the shares of Långvik Capital, a company associated with the Rotenbergs, and its stake in two other companies. Thus, the Finnish authorities gained control over the shares of the Helsinki Halli ice arena located in Helsinki and the company Långvik, which manages the hotel complex.
Regarding the arrested accounts of the Finnish division of Yandex, it is noted that it operates the Yango taxi service and a data center in the city of Mäntälä, writes Forbes.
Arkady Volozh was on the EU sanctions list in early June when Brussels announced the sixth round of sanctions against Russia over the war in Ukraine. After that, Volozh left all posts in Yandex. The company itself was not subject to sanctions.
But the Finnish authorities, in their decision, cite EU arguments that Yandex is “responsible for preferring Russian state media and the state agenda in search results,” as well as for removing content that criticizes the country’s government and aggressive war against Ukraine.
As reported, the EU announced its readiness for a new package of sanctions against the Russian Federation against the backdrop of Moscow’s statements about “referendums” and mobilization.
In addition, US senators proposed a new package of sanctions against Russia, after the pro-Kremlin administrations of the occupied regions of Ukraine simultaneously announced a referendum on joining the Russian Federation.
