The JMA warned that the region could face an “unprecedented” threat due to strong winds, raging waves and heavy rain.
“The storm-affected areas are experiencing unprecedented rainfall,” said Hiro Kato, director of the JMA’s Weather Monitoring and Warning Center. “Especially in landslide warning zones, it is very likely that some type of landslide is already happening,” he added.
Nearly 200,000 homes were already without electricity on Sunday, and regional rail links, flights and ferries were cancelled. Many shops are also closed.

Typhoon season continues in Japan
At the center of the typhoon, winds reached 108 km/h on Monday around noon local time (2 am Polish time). with gusts up to 162 km/h, the JMA said in a statement that wind gusts reached 234 km/h on Sunday.
The government has issued an evacuation order for areas that are home to about 9.7 million people in 14 of the country’s 47 prefectures. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Monday ordered government officials to “continue to assess the damage as soon as possible.”
The typhoon season is currently underway in Japan. About 20 such storms hit the country every year. Nanmadol is the 14th typhoon this year.
